All release notes for stable builds after 3.4.2 build 31893 are now on this page: http://releasenotes.utorrent.com/, older ones see below.

3.4 is an exciting release for the uTorrent team.
3.4 is the first version to include a major change in the way that uTorrent chooses peers in a swarm. Designed by our own Arvid Norberg, Canonical Peer Priority is a way to help peers connect to the swarm faster, as well as reduce the average hop length from you to any other peer in the swarm.
When a bittorrent client joins a swarm, it needs a way to select which peers it connects to. If it chooses poorly, or if there are malicious actors in the swarm, the connections between clients are not well distributed through the swarm, leading to a large number of hops from node to node. That slows down the ability to each client to pass data on to the next.
You can read a more detailed technical discussion of the issues here, along with graphs and figures that drive home how bad the worst case can be. You can read more about graph connectivity here.
Perhaps one of the biggest changes, though, is one you cannot see. Our engineering team has been growing rapidly, and we have been busy changing our development and release processes. uTorrent 3.4 will mark the first release using improved processes that should allow us to release much more often, while keeping stability at the levels you have come to expect from the world’s fastest and lightest torrent client.
Our previous release cycle was slow. We followed the traditional alpha -> beta -> stable model that a lot of software development follows, for example large video games or operating systems. One of the problems with this style of development is as stabilization work continues on the features you just developed, new features are requested, or requirements change, and now you have to balance two lines of development in the same tree.
Also, with more developers, more changes can be made simultaneously … in theory. In reality, changes in unrelated modules (e.g. the installer) would impact when we could ship new code in other areas (e.g. the disk code), and of course, vice versa. This creates a vicious cycle, where each small problem creates a knock-on effect that impacts other features.
In a situation like this, instead of asking the business to “pick one thing and stick with it” the correct response is for the engineering team to change how they operate.
* On a small scale, picking one thing and sticking with it.
* On a larger scale Multiplexing the work into separate branches.
We needed a way to release changes fast and reliably. This implied quite a few things:
* Don’t mix changes
* Release fast, review results fast
This required us to build a few systems. Some of the larger ones:
* Our release system (code-named “Cherry”)
* Or automatic update system (code-named “The automatic update system”)
It also required programming policies into the smaller parts of the system that already existed
* The build server
* The version control system
* New test servers
These systems, working together, can now answer the question: Is this feature ready for release?
Will deploying this feature likely increase or decrease the crash rate?
We now build individual features in separate branches, which are automatically tested for stability before being integrated into the mainline. That gives us confidence that we won’t slow other engineers down, and that we won’t release a low-quality build to customers.
This effort would not have been possible without the support of the excellent engineering team at Bittorrent.
I look forward to covering these in detail in later posts.
From the uTorrent engineering team, and the rest of Bittorrent as a whole, Happy torrenting!

Great news :)

One thing to report: just upgraded to v3.4 build 30596 stable (in win8.1 x64) and I noticed this:

when utorrent is not running,

if you click in the browser (eg Firefox or IE)

to download+open a .torrent file or to open a magnet link

then utorrent starts and just hangs - doesn't open the torrent/magnet link and the torrent list appears empty.

Then I have to kill utorrent.exe via task manager.

But, if utorrent is already running,

then clicking to open a .torrent or a magnet link, works ok.

It seems I cannot specify the installation location anymore (entry fields are still visible but not accessible/grayed out).

In contrast, though, to rafi's list of issues, I did *not* loose all my settings "when upgrading/installing from an older non-%appdata%\utorrent location", as I did because I did not see any other way getting it running.

Great news :)

...

Working Perfectly Fine here. the problem must be from your part. :)

-------------------------------

the only thing i could complain about is "about utorrent" windows which shows 2013 bittorrent. inc. all rights reserved. this mistake is always showing on utorrent releases.

In order to make sure how this is happening,

I uninstalled utorrent (incl. it's settings) and re-installed.

When utorrent install finished and utorrent started I closed it by clicking File>Exit

(and I doublechecked in task manager that uTorrent.exe had closed).

Then, in Firefox I clicked to download+open a .torrent.

That first time it opened ok.

Then I closed utorrent again.

If then I tried in Firefox to click to download+open a torrent

then utorrent hangs and I have to kill it in task Manager.

After I kill it, then if I try to click a torrent in FIrefox, it will open ok.

If I close it, then the second time I click to download+open a torrent, it will surely hang, and so on.

The same applies when clicking on a magnet link.

I have not changed any settings in utorrent, and utorrent.exe is not set to run as Administrator.

30596 - The transitions between the various download states are buggy:

  • After stopping a "queued seed" torrent, the status remains at "queued seed". In the right-click menu, "start" is grayed out, pressing "stop" does nothing, and selecting pause changes the status to "finished". (rafi's list: 4c)
  • After upgrading from 3.3.1 (build 30003), some (but not all) completed partial-download multi-file torrents have the status "downloading xx.x%", not "finished" like they should. They also started downloading data. I stopped them before receiving a single complete piece, forced a recheck, and reached 100%. (rafi's 3.4.1 list: not listed?)

[edit]

  • Torrents that are re-checking cannot be stopped, as well as those queued to be re-checked. Both the stop and pause buttons do nothing - the status remains at "Checked xx.x%" rather than change "stopped 0.0%". (rafi's 3.4.1 list: 4c?)

The following is different from previous versions, it may be a feature:

  • When re-checking multiple torrents, they are not re-checked in download "#" order. The order appears random to me. (rafi's 3.4.1 list: not listed?)

    Annoying implication:
Even when using "move up queue" to move a torrent all the way to the top, the torrent that starts rechecking after the current one finishes rechecking is not the one that was moved to the top, but a random one.

[edit2] Readability

...but unfortunately it is greyed out. What's the point in that?

So that's not annoying is it

The point is for you to at least see where it is installing it to... :P

And where were your settings files previously? Maybe they were always in appdata ?

Or maybe they've fixed it, with no changelog entry...

I cannot remove default directory mappings from "Label-Directory mapping". Minus button just doesnt work on them.

And, actually, directory mapper doesn't work at all.

#6 on my list... For a long time...

http://forum.utorrent.com/topic/88339-341-beta/?p=479433

If the feature doesn't work for you - you don't need it, right?... And it does work...

In the RSS Downloader under Quality most of the options have been eliminated.  The options there are "All, 720p, 1080i, 1080p,  480p".  Without the other options it almost make the Downloader useless.

Poobably because they imply of illegal content. And they are not a *must*, you can always just put them in your search filter, like *my-show*HDTV* ...

As recently as 30570 the sorting was elegant.  I could sort by status (downloading at the top, followed by seeding, then queued seeding, and finally finished.  Then within those categories, the downloading was sorted ordinally and the rest alphabetically within status.  Now I can only either choose sort by status or by name but not both at the same time.  I suppose if I did not use UT as a sort of index for all my completed torrents this would not be an issue but it is a showstopper for me no matter what other improvements may be present.  Also, force checking seemed to just hang at 0 but I did not stick around long to determine the exact conditions that brought that on.  I had seen enough.  I am so thankful that I got into the habit of doing a complete backup of the install folder just before upgrading.  It is so easy to revert then.  I am normally a willing beta tester but I think I will just sit on my hands for now. I must keep reminding myself that newer is not always better...

I think utorrent holds the record for the most adware in any single program. One of which is malware(conduit). 3 adware in the installer alone is a record. As I said before, 90% of utorrents problems would go away if all the adware is removed. Its not like they use the money to improve the program anyway.

I see, so the devs work for free... You just need to pay attention, and skip/remove whatever ad you don't like.

There is no devs. If there was a single programmer on the utorrent team then it would have been miles better then it is now. Remove the ads and make it open source so I can help fix this broken ad-ridden program.
