SaNdMaN82
Hello. I'm running the current latest stable version...I've noticed that for some days now (I'd say 1-2 weeks), when copying finished downloaded files from my internal HDD to an external USB3 drive, speeds were just awful...Before I noticed this issue, the copy operation would achieve not less than 70-80 mb/s... Now, it's less than 20 mb/S. What I found is that the downloaded files, are fragmented... Drive where the file is downloaded, has a total of 500GB, and more than half is empty... Disk is defragmented weekly...But some reason, it seems that when downloading, instead of using 'the second half' of the drive which has contiguos space, the file is allocated ALL OVER THE DISK...And when I mean all over, I mean all over... From start to finish... A 1.5gb file had over 5000 fragments, all spattered ...So that's why my copying speeds went south, because of the 'random' read needed in order to read the file... Did something change at a code level that could explain this behaviour?. Thanks.
DreadWingKnight
Are you using sparse files?
SaNdMaN82
If you mean this setting on the advanced settings, then yes... It's work mentioning that I didn't change it...What does that setting do exactly?. Thanks.
DreadWingKnight
It causes space to be allocated as needed for files rather than try to pre-allocate all the files. It increases fragmentation of the files, but improves the start-up time and initial allocation of the downloads, as well as preventing disk overloads at medium-class speeds. And did the 'logic' involved in the 'allocation on the fly' change recently?Because as I said before, I didn't set that value, so it must be that's the default... And even though I've updated to the latest version, I'd believe this is the setting I have always had... So it's strange to me that this issue started just recently... DreadWingKnight
The default for it was changed recently due to the performance boost it offers during downloading.
SaNdMaN82
I will change that setting to see how it behaves... Because I didn't noticed issues before...Enviado desde telégrafo #XT-1058
SaNdMaN82
Hello again.I've changed the value for sparse files to false, and now I've no issues at all...I've just copied about 21GB of recently downloaded files from the internal HDD to the external USB3 one in about 3-4 minutes...So everything went back to normal. This thread can be closed. Thanks for the support.
