Error: The requested operation could not be completed due to a file system limitation.
Can anyone help me solve this problem? I'm downloading a 5.45GB .mdf file with free hd space of 30GB. I'm running on vista home premium sp1. I'm using utorrent 1.8beta.

You need to disable sparse files in utorrent, make a COPY of your files, delete the originals, move the copy back, then force a re-check.
There's a bug with sparse files in Vista that makes them completely unusable.

When you say disable sparse files, do you mean go to Preferences>Advanced and set "diskio.sparse_files" to false?
Offline
Yes. Even if you disable it now, the files are still sparse, so you have to do the copy trick to make them not sparse anymore.

Problem solved. Thank you Firon.

I'm having the exact same problem and I tried to do what you said, but when I try to copy the files I get the same file system limitation error, only through a windows prompt instead of utorrent. How do I copy the files?

You can't even copy the files to another directory, or partition? If you can't do that.. you have no choice but to delete and start over (with sparse disabled).

Sadly, it doesn't look like Microsoft feels inclined to fix this rather critical bug.

At least not until it's published as a security vulnerability..

Microsoft is a large company. Changes to ntfs.sys ... don't rollout just willy nilly
Maybe post XP SP4 / Vista SP2
OP: It's still an oddity that you can't copy the file... unless your drive is also going bad??

Hey I was readin this topic because I had the same issues, and this really helped..
@Evanathsma: I had the same problem copying it from the utorrent directory, the windows error.. But I bypassed it by using "The File Splitter", I split up the files in smaller parts and then copied them out of the folder. I joined them again and voila, its been working thus far, Its worth the effort and doesnt take long.. certainly not as long as downloading the whole file again!
