Re: µTorrent Plus coming this Fall

Honestly I am against this. I switched from Azureus to uTorrent when it went commercial and changed to Vuze. I looked at the survey, I wouldn't pay a dime for a torrent client when there are plenty of free open source alternatives available. I don't need a client that is also a a/v scanner, video player, video converter, etc. It's just bloat and none of them are going to be 'I need to have that' features.

MPC-HC works fine for me, I don't need codecs with that either and it's very advanced. I would use handbrake if I needed to convert video.

Now I may not be uTorrent Plus 'Target Audience' and thats fine, but I don't want torrents to go mainstream. The 'mainstream' still use emule or stupidly limewire, It's bad enough seeing torrent comments by 'ignorant' users saying 'how do I open a rar'?'

One feature I wouldn't mind would be the ability to unrar/unzip files on completion automatically, but I already set that up with the 'execute file when complete' advanced feature. I can also setup a a/v scanner with that feature too.

One more +1. Actually I would pay for removing all of this. Progressbar in W7 taskbar and inteligent file sorting would be nice too.

I am against this! -
"Apps" - is uTorrent "plug-ins". Anyone can make them and should be able to, freely
"Remote" - if this is not free, people will use VNC/logmein etc. No one will pay for it.
"Streaming/DNA" - ok for a plus.

one-tiny-problem: they don't anything usefull, and (most?!) people here care only for the basics: add torrent, select files, download it -- only that without anything getting in the way (and having to disable new thing with every version is getting kinda annoying...)

Firstly you don't need to to disable Apps. Just avoid using them.
Secondly - Applications' usefulness is up to the developer. You are welcome to build something useful to complement things that are   missing in uTorrnet, like - RSS post-processing, search filters/views etc.

yes I do - they are cluttering the UI and make it less readable.
secondly - the problem is that i don't miss anything - what matters for me is the value of the protocol and handling it followed by the optimization on the resources; i don't need to backup the whole internet to use RSS - those few clicks I can manage myself, searching is also easier in the regular browsers due to variety of sources...

what I was saying - feel free do to "plus" version and leave bare, simple uTorrent lite...

There is one problem there is no single usable app. Even concepts you mentioned are marginally usable. And even if - that should be made as classic plugins - like in lets say Miranda IM, Eclipse, Notepad++ or any other program with plugin support - until you don't need them they aren't pushed in front of you. Who needs that huge browser in main application window? Are you going to install plugins every day?

As for remote - I'm perfectly fine with good old web interface - at least I doesn't have to trust 3rd party servers - but ok - that one might be useful for some people.

Re: µTorrent Plus coming this Fall

I understand why Bittorrent Inc is doing this.  I don't understand why they are continuing to confuse their branding though.  What makes sense to me is, now that the Official Bittorrent Client is a clone of utorrent, why they don't start adding accessibility features to that, while leaving utorrent to be the client that only did torrent management, and nothing else.

I am happy about a lot of features implemented into utorrent that most object to.  I like uTP, sharing, remote, streaming, alternative list views, more extensive labeling and all around core features that make the client awsome for managing torrent downloads and seeds.

Adding apps, torrent discovery, social network like capability, and now support for consumer devices seems superfluous though.  The line I am drawing here is that none of these features have to do with download management, and are moving into the direction of torrent discovery/search and social networking and video trans coding and playback.

These are all fine tools and would be great if implemented into a torrent client as good as utorrent.  But It does not make sense to make utorrent that client.  Put these features that do not relate to torrent management into a different client.  You happen to have Bittorrent, which really needs some differentiation from utorrent.  Right now, it isnt clear what the differences are between the two official and utorrent clients are, because they are not significant.  Furthurmore, I can only see this as an attempt to get more people using one of your clients.  Having no distinguishing characteristics will just confuse the crap out of people who you are trying to attract.

Listen to your users, strengthen your branding, increase your audience size.  Leave uTorrent as your simplified, torrent management client only.  Make the Bittorrent client your feature rich client that extends beyond torrent management.  Think about how apple and other companies that are know for strong branding do things.  They work really hard at making sure that their products have really strong characteristics that distinguish them from their other products.  You should do the same.

Yes yes! Please, take all this bloatware crap like "apps", "streaming" to separate version. Remove it from free version, do us a favor. Torrent client should download torrents and do it best. It should not make coffee, iron socks, play your movies, convert and stream media files. Leave it to software specifically designed for that.

I just don't get it. Why everyone tries to make "universal software"? Nero once was excellent lightweight CD authoring tool. Winamp once was excellent lightweight music player. What a crap it became today.

Look around, guys! At real world. Nobody use sportcars as lorry or beat speed records on family car. Nobody uses coffee machine to heat meal. Even washing machine and dryer are separate entities, despite they look similar and take part in same process - laundering. Good sound system has separate satellites and subwoofer. Do I need bring other examples?
Do something one, but do it best.

Best reply IMO. I've used utorrent for years and years and am a big fan, but please just leave it alone or make relevant improvements. If your company wants to branch out into other fields, so be it, but keep it away from our favourite torrent software PLEASE. roll

uTorrent Plus installation

When running utorrent btkey for installation, I get this error message:
"Invalid license key file (file too short)"
Thus, I am not able to install/activate uTorrent Plus
Please advise how to proceed.
Thanks.

Re: µTorrent Plus coming this Fall

what browser are you using to download?

FAQ and Search - Use them.
If guides ask for info, provide it before I have to ask for it.
