  1. µTorrent 3.3.1: Automatic updating, fit-and-finish improvements µTorrent 3.3.1 joins the list of modern software that's enabling silent, automatic updating. This means that stability improvements, small features and performance enhancements can be passed on without the need for upfront steps by the user. Among other minor changes for this point release is improved overall fit and finish of the UI. This was achieved through many small adjustments including consolidation of icons, improvement in image quality, and removal of unnecessary lines and spaces. The cumulative result is a less distracting, more organized look that preserves the user experience you're used to. In addition, we made numerous crash, stability and other improvements (examples: checked 0.0%, rate limiter, increased magnet link size, crash fix in the Plus player). 2. This controversial new added feature in plain site or not was snuck in because it was originally not mentioned in the changelog but I see it was added two days later. Something this controversal and unwanted should not have been a surprise! And I agree talk is cheap... Roll those Dice! Yes, the change log was updated two days later because you pointed out the omission, Beasly. I noted this in the change log. Thank you, again. We do make mistakes. By the way, we told users in this forum over a month ago this change was coming. I hope you weren't too surprised.
  3. Actually, no. This is a bug - it's designed to be in Advanced settings (no special keystroke required). This will be fixed.
  4. "Snuck in" something that's in plain site and impossible to miss? Hardly. But you're right, Beasly, it should be in the change log. I'll check on that. Anyway, yes the offers are in the main gui as we said before; and yes you can disable the offers as we promised. It sounds like there is talk of a bug where offers come back after turning them off (you do this in advanced settings as naiduv pointed out) but I'm not sure if that's confirmed yet - we didn't see that internally. Maybe it's just confusion on the feature. You can click an x in top right to advance to he next offer and when no more offers are available the entire unit closes. But it comes back after a preset time. However that advanced setting naiduv mentioned should turn the offer unit off permanently. Let us know if that's not working. If there is a bug, we'll fix it. It looks like they snuck this "featured content" without mentioning it in the changelog in version 3.2.1.27999 That just goes to show money talks and bulls**t walks thus the trust level we have for you will lower dramatically. No option to disable it and it had to be added to the main gui...Shame! Shame! The devs really did listen to the users...NOT! http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=123040 http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=123284 I have a feeling you are going to regret adding this "featured content" and you better monitor future utorrent useage if this feature will become permanant. Just because utorrent is the most used torrent client at the present time doesn't mean it's going to stay that way.
  5. Well, let's count. Up to your posting of this question, it's one post responding to your fellow forum contributor where he suggested the idea of paying for a 2.2-like client, and five that had nothing to do with it. So it's just you.
  6. Okay, let me try. If I understand your question correctly, the answer is simple. Whether the client is making a request for an offer (the upcoming functionality), or the client is checking for a new version update (which we've had since the beginning of the client), we simply don't keep a record of IP addresses/users/clients. When we talk about making ads relevant to users, it is by pursuing things we think you as a user base will like. For example, news of a new torrent-based technology we're working on, a free game, or torrent-based online backup (as opposed to a dishwashing liquid, punch-the-monkey or other mainstream offers we will not be pursuing). For those of you familiar, think along the lines of Evernote client ads versus your typical Web site ads. When we talk about using geo at a country level, it means that some offer types may play differently in Canada versus Korea versus the US versus Italy... At the end of the day, nothing changes pertaining to privacy. It's a great idea to verify this for yourself, of course, by wiresharking communication regarding offers. No personally identifiable information is there.
  7. Very well said, SimpleToe. I really appreciate your thoughtful comments and your very concrete, alternative suggestions. I wonder how many would buy a "lite" version as you suggest with exactly the properties you list, with the only additions being the security, performance and "fundamentals" (bug fixes, better magnet link handling, etc) we've added over the years. I'm very interested to hear others' thoughts on this idea. Still listening...
  8. There are many other ways to implement More income/revenue for the continuing development of utorrent although the millions per year quotes in the article should be more than enough! Do they really need more to keep their lights on? Why are you adding this feature to the free version when you have the plus bringing in income! Slow down...smell the coffee... This new feature will be obtrusive and will use more real estate for some...Many do not want to see this everytime they open up utorrent... Remember in many cases $$$ destroys for various reasons and it also clouds judgement decisions! BUT If you must it needs to be added to the sidebar with an option to either hide it or disable it per user. I'm trying to be opened minded about this but all I see is making more $$$. And please don't take the peoples opinions on this matter lightly! Some have been loyal and/or contributors for years and those you really do not want to lose! LIstening here. Thanks for staying with us, and especially for keeping an open mind. We can adjust, which is exactly why we're having this conversation pre-release. Please keep engaging with us. Your post brings up an important point: What are we doing with our revenue? - For one thing, we continue to invest in the product reduced memory consumption, improved disk performance, improved utp, improved stability, and again - NO big new features planned (we may even trim). - We invest in bringing UT to new platforms: android, WinRT, Chrome OS, TVs, DMAs, etc. - We invest in other decentralized, free, user-controlled p2p systems: Live, Storage, Backup, Search, etc. - We work with artists, large and small, to get them in front of our users, present and even monetize their content on their behalf as an alternative to the usual channels. See http://www.rollingstone.com/culture/blogs/gear-up/dj-shadow-becomes-first-artist-to-strike-payment-deal-with-bittorrent-20120731 and http://blog.utorrent.com/2012/07/26/whats-new-the-dj-shadow-revolution-radiohead-is-our-friend-last-day-to-win-more/ The point is, we're doing a lot more than we ever have, and that takes people and resources.
  9. I don't know what to say. We haven't even released the product yet. Our loyal users are the very first people we discussed this with. And here I am at nearly 3am talking to you, a loyal user. To say we don't mind what our loyal users do...I don't get it. Perhaps I'm just digging myself in further and there's nothing I can say. I will say...will you hang in there with us a bit more, Bombora? And others of you? Again, at least see how things play out here. Will you keep talking? I hope so.
  10. I get it, r00t4rd3d. You're leaving, and we suck. Despite all this, just maybe we're not as terrible as you think, just maybe we'll make good for users like you. I hope so. And if we can make you and others like you happy, I will in turn be very happy if you decide to come back. Sorry it ends this way...for now! Good luck.
  11. I think many of you may not realize how important your comments are and that, unlike some of what's being said, we do listen and respond. That we don't care about your opinions in particular is something I hope you can see is false - we announce these types of things to you all first, before we even launch the change, so we can listen and respond. One such example: Since the launch of 3.0, we have heard the calls of "bloat" by many. Since 3.0, you may notice that no new big features have been added. This is, to a significant extent, in response to your comments. The current product plan is to fix bugs, focus on performance, and do small features you all request. So when we say "features we think you'll like" as some have quoted, we are talking about things like improved performance with many torrents, drag-and-drop onto labels, improved magnet link handling, improvements to "add torrent" dialog, and so on. And we are even re-analyzing our current 3.0 line feature set in context of your comments. I want to say that with this new offer space, we are truly optimistic that the kind of things we put there or in the existing Plus ad space in the lower left will be tasteful, interesting, and okay for you. Thought has been put behind them. So for example, of course nothing changes with your privacy. These offers will not be distasteful. They will not pop up, make noise, and so on. We haven't even decided on all the defaults in terms of if they're dismissible or not. Many of you have volunteered your time and opinions with us for many years. You've recommended us. You're a big part of our success. I understand you all are skeptical. I know many of you have seen good products go bad, because of bloat and "stupidity" and "greed." And that you've no reason to see this as any different. Nothing I say here will change that. But let's be honest about one thing: we are here, we are listening, and I hope you'll at least look at our actions and make decisions based on how things actually end up, rather than decide based on how you fear they will end up. More later. Thanks for listening.
  12. Not the way you're thinking, that's for sure. This is a really good question. The answer, if I'm reading you correctly, is simple: We will NOT suddenly be aware of your identity and your activity because, as you know, that's now even how our technology works. So you won't be getting even close to the types of personalized offers you get from Web sites that track your browsing history. BUT, that doesn't mean we can't know anything. For example, even at a general level we know our torrent users are more interested in learning about downloads of emerging artists, new free games, or a really good, free security solution than they are about the wide range of offers one might encounter elsewhere on the Web. And as we release offers to users, we'll find out which are generally popular and which aren't and improve. Through means like these, we hope to make ads more relevant and interesting over time.
  13. info??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? I believe that 27022 was released to beta on the 6th (last Friday) to test a fix for the growing settings.dat file issue. Per standard practice, we don't post a fix to stable until we test it internally and then in beta first. That's why the stable version was and is out-of-sync with the beta version.
  14. Thanks. Which version are you using?
  15. Thanks for the report. Our bad...we'll fix it.
  16. Hi, Thanks for the post. First, a work-around is to create a skin and customize the colors. Here is a guide on how to do that. Meanwhile, we've got a long list of bugs to work through and may not get to this soon. http://www.utorrent.com/community/developers/createskin
  17. Thanks for testing and for this! We filed a bug.
  18. Thanks for testing and for this! We filed a bug.
  19. Thanks for testing and for the idea, we appreciate it and we'll look into it. In the mean time, have you tried using labels for organizing? Right click and select label.
  20. Okay. This problem was created as part of an attempt to improve the add torrent dialog with expand/contract functionality; we're evaluating the success of this; as part of this we'll also look into this bug. Thanks!
  21. Thanks. We changed the process for your #1 so that should be improved. For the second, we're on it.
  22. Thanks, Randy. We're making improvements.
