About the main advantages of 64 bit versions: Probably the biggest advantage is that a 64bit system will no longer have to emulate 32bit for the application. Although the compatibility is quite good and fast, it's still the goal to just use 64bit and not need any 32bit duplicate libraries and emulation at all.
