  1. it seems that Qbittorrent is now the most used torrent client by far, while Utorrent seems to have vanished.  I still use utorrent, but I use version 3.5.5 build 46606 which is the last 3.5x before they went to the disastrous 3.6x

  2. I have tried a few versions of 3.6.x and regretted it for various reasons including it automatically updating even when you tell it NOT to automatically update, and Microsoft blacklisting utorrent.

So, I stick with version 3.5.5 build 46606 which was the final 3.5.5  (at least I'm not one of those kooks that still use version 2.2.1 !!)

I still get some silly certificate download errors which I ignore.

Today, I noticed that since 11/23/2023, the downloads with subdirectories are not only NOT creating subdirectories, but also chopping off all but the first level of saved directory.  I took a guess at how to fix this, and it WORKED!

I got ahold of RAFI 's last "Best Settings" DAT file, and replaced the existing SETTINGS.DAT file with it.  That solved the directory problem.  All I had to change was to UNcheck the box that says "Do Not Automatically Start downloads" and to change the default SAVE directory.  They are under OPTIONS/PREFERENCES/DIRECTORIES and OPTIONS/PREFERENCES/UI SETTINGS.

On a side note, Microsoft has pretty much destroyed the computer software industry.

The screen above is from the MS defender message, so i am talking about it. But yes, MS is the biggest player. Most of the companies on VT use few big companies signatures. Our observation - as soon as MS removes some flag, half of other flags on VT "magically" disappears. Few other remove flags after we submit executable for clearance, but this is very time consuming - at the moment they done with the analysis, we already have new build.
     ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Many years ago..  I made roughly $292,000 per year with my software sales.  Then, Microsoft began tagging ALL executable files as MALWARE unless the source code for the executable was submitted to THEM for approval.  The REASON I was making an average of $800 per day with my software - which was just ONE program - was because nobody else had the technology to do what I was doing with my software.  For over 3 years, I was ranked #1 on Google, which is why I was doing so well.  Then, my software began to be tagged as being malware, even though it was not, because the crooks at MS did not certify it.  As a result, the online sales company I sold my software through automatically issued refunds to everybody that complained that my software was malware.  This FORCED me to submit my source code to Microsoft for their certification.  Within one month of doing that, my software was certified and no longer tagged as being malware, but mysteriously, there were dozens of other vendors who now were using MY technology, and my ranking on Google which had always been #1 for 3 years, fell to about 2000.  If your software is not in the top 10 on Google, you can forget about getting any sales.  You have to be on page 1,  and even on page 1, you better be in the top 3.  Being on page 200 results in getting NO hits on Google, and NO sales.   Within 3 months after that, my sales went from $800 per day to ZERO.  I have not made a penny on my software in many years.  Thanks alot Microsoft!   Here's an idea.  Force MiCROSOFT to make all of THEIR source code public domain!

  4. I think that 3.5.5 build 46606 is the best, the last of the 3.5.5 and probably the end of the line for Utorrent

I know that some of the 3.6 versions are disasters, and that they now auto-update whether you want them to or not - so at any moment, your working Utorrent can just stop working correctly.  3.6x have problems with not downloading and/or not uploading.

FWIW, the std beta link returned 46840 today; this one has FIVE companion dll's you must install w/ the utorrent.exe file.

     http://download-new.utorrent.com/endpoint/utorrent/os/windows/track/beta

I wonder WHAT is in those DLLs that Utorrent is using?  Some better versions of subroutines?  The idea of DLLs is to reduce file sizes by using a generic database of perfected routines.  For instance, many programs require a method of sorting information.  It would be silly for every program in existence to code and compile it's own sorting routine.  Instead, the code accesses a DLL that is already part of the operating system.  A program should not have it's OWN dll files unless there are several executables that make up the program that access the same subroutines.

My tweaks are tested with 3.5.x . BTW, you have an LAA flagged exe in my sig...

Most people are not aware of the importance of the LAA flag UNTIL Utorrent starts locking up when they have a massive number of torrents like I do.  I have two laptops, one running 3.5.5 46606 with the LAA flag (which I think was the last build of 3.5.5) which works fine.  The other laptop has the latest 3.6 without the LAA flag.. and it is a royal pain in my ASS!   It is stuck on "Not Responding" most of the time just because after all this time, the yoyos who churn out Utorrent have STILL not realized how important that LAA flag is.

I am busy watching all those torrents downloaded over the years... and with a stable/working version ;P

I was forced to install 3.6 build 46822 about half an hour ago, because the EXE file of the final build of 3.5 mysteriously vanished off of my computer.

are your tweaks still in place? or should I reinstall them?

OK - this is getting silly.

I've not (yet) updated as per @SergeyQAs suggestion.

Left uTorrent running. Power cut or whatever at some point while I was away. Came back, restarted computer, then uTorrent, and... All torrents are gone. Not just a case of not downloading or whatever - I have no torrents at all. 6 (or so) were there when I left, with at least one actively downloading.

Are the files still on your hard drive, but just not listed in the Utorrent app?

Did the files ever complete downloading in the first place?

I use Utorrent 3.5.5 46606 quite successfully.  Where did you get your copy of it?  From this site, another site, or from Rafi?

... and where IS Rafi?  He seems to have vanished shortly after 3.6 came out.   Maybe an alien abduction?

  9. Whenever I turn on Utorrent with my external drive DISconnected - Utorrent goes nuts marking all my files with "Path Not Found"

To fix this, I have to re-check the files that are already there.

BUT - this takes a LONG time.  A VERY long time.

Can't this process be sped up?

  10. It does not upload nor download.   I have read nothing but complaints about it.

HOWEVER..   I have seen ONE person in my peer list using a version of 3.6

Used to be mostly Utorrent, now other clients are used much more.

Those using Utorrent usually use versions 2.2.1, although some use 3.2.3 and some use 3.5.5

    I use version 3.5.5

As I recall, the 3.4x series was a disaster that would spontaneously disassociate the torrents from the files they were associated with.

One thing I must admit.. those "Trending Videos" are neat, even though I almost NEVER look at them.   If the Trending Videos don't complicate the Utorrent code, I would keep that feature.   I remember a long time ago, Utorrent was loaded with games that were hated by almost everyone.

I have not noticed Utorrent being tagged as a virus lately, but maybe that is due to the fact that I am using version 3.5.5

At one point, I was forced to start using another client (Qbittorrent) because my antivirus was blocking and removing Utorrent.

  11. I think it has been over 3 months since the last version of Utorrent 3.5 was released - and it was functional.

I am not aware of any version of 3.6 that works.

Seems to me that every day that goes by, more and more people are installing a 3.6 version or upgrading to a 3.6 version that is DOA.

Maybe what they need to do is dump 3.6x entirely, and take the last version of 3.5 and NAME it 3.7 or 4.0, and take baby steps from there.

3.6x has been such a disaster that I don't trust it.

  12. I never use the auto-updating, I always use manual.

I was staying with version 3.5 because of all the negative comments about 3.6

Somehow, my utorrent DID auto-update to version 3.6 build 46590 - and now it no longer uploads nor downloads!

Hopefully, downgrading to Rafi's 3.5 will fix the problem.   I still have 3.5 installed on another laptop, and that version works fine!   I pity all the people who got auto-updated to 3.6 - and now have a useless torrrent client.

    [OFF]

For all the faithful beta testers here, here is  a Black Friday / Cyber Monday deal you might not want to miss:

Lifetime VPN subscription for $10.20 (for up to 5 devices) after using "BF15" code... Too good to be true?... Maybe who cares :)

Yes, a bit less known provider ( fastestVPN.com ) , probably less that the '10-best' , but if you need one for this price - it's a good deal... I am seeing 50-120Mbps speeds to 70ms away servers...

The plan I see is called "Lifetime" but is actually 5 years + 3 months for $40.  Strange pricing.  I don't see that $10.20 offer anywhere, and the BF15 code did not work.  I hope it is legit.  It should bring down the prices of other VPNs.   It seems like the cost of internet, VPNs, and services such as Usenet are dropping.  I used to use Usenet a LOT before torrenting.. but Usenet became Useless when 99% of it's content was loaded with viruses.

  14. Thanks for that warning about 3.6 build 46590

    ========

    problem i am having  is

    utorrent.exe

    and

    utorrentie.exe

are constantly being flagged as being malware

Can't something be done about that?  This problem has existed for SEVERAL years.

Slow is one thing (also depends on your resources, cpu, hd-ssd), not functional - I don't think so. I think that now it just stops if there are other active downloads...

Yes, but it now sometimes freezes when there are no downloads going on.

I notice there is a "skip hash check" when first downloading the torrents (which puzzles me, because before the download begins, there is nothing to check!)

Then I read something that confirmed what I thought - that it's not a good idea to skip a hash check after a reboot, because utorrent has no idea if a torrrent has been correctly written to the hard drive or not.  I think I found a solution!

    1. Allow hash checks to be skipped on INCOMPLETE downloads.

    2. Once everything is downloaded, REQUIRE a hash check (perhaps during the "Flushing To Disk" function).

    3. Once a torrent has completed and been flushed to disk, it is then marked "COMPLETED" and then hash check skipping should be allowed on that torrent.

So, I think that BEFORE a torrent has been fully downloaded, and AFTER it has been flushed to disk AND checked, it should be able to skip a hash check and save a LOT of time.

--- Another alternative would be to just allow hash checking to be skipped AFTER it has been marked "COMPLETE" and still require the hash check for downloads in progress.

    DEVS care to chime in?

I have used Utorrent for decades, and I am not aware of the DEVs chiming in about anything.. ever.

The only advice I trust is from Rafi, and even then, only after he's had a chance to test it himself.  I think he got a nasty surprise with a recent version, and he cautioned us about it.

The problem I mentioned recently about CHECKING is a real problem.  It's not only slow, it is sometimes non-functional - and the checks NEVER finish.  In those circumstances, I would prefer to abort the check, and download the entire torrent from scratch.

  17. Checking... checking.. checking..

Checking has always been slooooow.. but now it is FROZEN

    I am on version 355  46536

I have NO activities running, yet the Status shows a torrent checking at 36.3% and has been at 36.3% for over 2 hours.

I wish there were a way to cancel a check in progress, or better yet, speed them up!

I might have  noticed this too... What exactly is your use-case? Restart of what exactly - a torrent? uTorrent?

Anyways’ the stable LAA - was uploaded to: - >uTorrent EXE with LAA Flag<

I am confused by your "best settings dat" file.  I've used it in the past with great success.

I just tried downloading it, and it looks like a corrupted file called  settings_355_1M+.dat.[6106264C].w3qupe   What is that?

  19. The "free" version is loaded with advertising, and there is also a paid version.

If you think this program doesn't have serious bugs, you haven't used it long.

Even if you forget about bugs..   it is still compiled as 32 bit - which limits how much memory it has access to.  It needs to join the 21st century and be compiled as 64 bit.
