I've got updatitis and it's real itchy

Hi all

I've been happily subscribing to Utorrent Pro (various iterations) for a long time.  I love it.  It is an excellent example of UI design while it just does what it's meant to do without fuss.  Microsoft should cheery pick the developers yesterday.  As for the program in free form .... hmmm.

But it seems the relationship is in dire need of counselling.  I've downloaded the installer with my key and it won't update to Pro.  I've saved my licence and opened it with Utorrent and I get a 403 error (and some others depending upon the mood).

So I am left with the free version.  It's funny how we take things for granted - as in a stable working automatic upgrade of a free version to Pro.  The free version is a horror.  Of course the comment is highly subjective.  As I explain, I suspect others might form a similar opinion.

I don't want any product to deliberately take me to a malware site or a blocked site (too many nasties for Chrome, IE or Google to allow).  Redirects and attempts to drive-by download malware, regardless of the source, is unethical business practice.  I was stunned that one of favourite subscriptions appears to have over to the dark side of the force.

I'm hardly a tech newbie so I was able to run out of nasty sites before any permanent damage was done.  My concern is that lots of users (perhaps lots of kids?) don't possess the skills to know that they are in danger ... especially when it's caused by (directed to) a deservedly highly rated and respected product like uTorrent.  Something is wrong and users (mostly) don't know the danger that they are in if they click ads or my personal devil spawn of a favourite - the flashing message con telling me the PC or operating system is buggered.

I pay for the privilege of using this elegant program (and others too) because of self interest.  Developers, quite properly, should be financially rewarded for their past work and encouraged to continue developing their product as circumstances evolve.  It's more than fair especially given the relatively low cost of this wonderful product.

My concern about the 'free' version is that it is unlikely to encourage me to shell out money for the Pro version (the developers lose potential income) and using the 'free' product feels as safe as walking upside down, backwards and blindfolded through a minefield.  Developer time is precious.  So too is my time from my perspective.  The risk of trashing a PC with bots or other malware is high and so too is the opportunity cost of fixing whatever damage is done - if that is possible.  I sure do not want my PC to run a kiddy porn site nor do I want someone to lock me out of social media accounts because they change the password.  This is how scammers get into your most private areas of information and destroy you financially and personally.

I just want to install uTorrent Pro.  It shouldn't be interpreted as a chore because I have paid for the licence.

Please, please, please .... developer Gods - break the chains that prevent me from enjoying the simple pleasure of using a working copy of uTorrent Pro.  The Great Platypus will assign lots of positive karma upon you and you will be in her good favour forever.

Mike
