Thrush
Hi, hope someone here can help me, as I am a bit new to all this, and only been using uTorrent for a week or so now, but I can't solve this problem!!!!The little connection status icon in the bottom bar of the programme ALWAYS starts of yellow, usuually stays yellow for a little while then ALWAYS goes red. I can NOT get it to go green!I have tried changing ports, using random ports, opened new ports in my routers firewall, disabled my own personal firewall - everything but it never seems to solve the problem!!!!Can anyone help me please? DreadWingKnight
Disabling personal firewalls doesn't disable their blocking (with the SOLE exception of the windows firewall). You MUST uninstall them to get them to stop interfering.
Thrush
I should have added that Zone Alarm (my PC's personal firewall) has been set to allow uTorrent for both up and download (access and server) and even tho I don't use the windows firewall I set uTorrent in the exceptions list..... Thrush
Do I need to set up a static IP? Cos I just realised that everytime I flash save and reboot my router, I get assigned a new IP address! So the opened port isn't forwarding to the IP address I set it to - which WAS the one I was on at the time, but after it had been saved it changed me to a new IP!But if I set up static IP for my PC, does it effect the other PC's connected to my router and modem in my house? DreadWingKnight
List of things1> ZoneAlarm causes more problems than it solves/prevents2> Static IP (usually outside of the router's DHCP range but in the same subnet) is required on a VERY large number of routers.3> Having a static IP only on machines that are getting port forwarded to won't affect other machines.4> http://portforward.com is your friend
Thrush
DreadWingKnight - hi, I used portforward.com when I set up uTorrent, and did all it said, but still get this problem!I just tried to set a static IP for this machine, but when I rebooted all I got was NO internet connection at all! So I set back to do it all automatically and rebooted - back to normal and works fine!So I did something else. I went into my router to VIRTUAL SERVER to where I set the open ports and set my IP to address to one that my router assigns my machine, one I have seen half a dozen times when poking in my router settings. I thought it's a long shot, but I set the open uTorrent port to be forwarded to THAT ip address, and I have just shut down and re-started uTorrent.....and I now have a green icon!!!! It says "your netowkr is ok and is working like it should"So it's worked, but I don't know why! unless my router sets static ip address for each machine connected to it for ADSL....Very confused! silverfire
Virtual server means basically DMZ'ing your connection. What you have to realize is that when you do that, you are removing all firewall protections from your computer. Any and every un-forwarded port will be assigned to the DMZ IP including malicious ones. While it serves its purpose as making your computer reachable, it's an extremely stupid setup to stick with because it leaves you wide open for attacks. Thrush
Oh..... Forgive me, I don't quite grasp the concept of IP's and port forwarding yet, but I understand from that post that that is a bad thing right? How do I change this?
silverfire
You need to properly port forward your internal IP to be protected by your firewall. If you're setting DMZ or Virtual Server, you're doing the equivalent of standing at the edge of a cliff with a 'PUSH ME' sticker taped to your back. Thrush
The port opened and directed to my machines IP was the way portforward.com explained to do it - what other way do I need to do it?

Switeck
Some routers say 'virtual server' when they mean port-forwarding. They allow limited ranges instead of all 1-65535 ports. It's not as bad as it sounds...like DMZ can be!

DreadWingKnight
Routers aren't "On" computers unless that computer is running internet connection sharing. If they are a separate box (which they usually are) they aren't on his computer or yours, they're just there.
