woodyuk
HiI was wondering what people thought the best and worst firewall / routers / dsl modemI am using a Belkin at the moment and finding it pretty crap. I had a Draytek before which was expensive but had lots of cool features. I liked having a voip and VPN feature which the Draytek gave. I have used Linksys before I know you can load your own firmware etc. Just wondering what other people thought.
Ultima
You'll find that Linksys WRT54GL is a favorite among a lot of users because of the reason you stated above, not to mention the fact that it has a lot of features for a sub-$100 router. Invy
I recently bought a WRT54GL about a couple of weeks ago and I am really not 100% satisfied. About once or twice a day I find that it has disconnected me from IRC for no good reason even though my torrents are running fine. My bigger complaint about it is that it assigns me a freakin different IP address about once a day as well and also I get that little yellow icon in the utorrent status bar. Any idea why it's not letting me keep the same assigned IP? It get's annoying and repetitive having to run ipconfig and then set the DMZ IP every so often. osm0sis
you should be able to make your ip static using your mac address in the router options. also, dmz is not recommended for port forwarding in uTorrent. have you tried the new UPnP options in uTorrent? I believe WRT54GL is one of the ones that it works well with. even if it does not, you should just be able to port forward. Info on that can be found at portforward.com
Invy
Can you be a little bit more specific please? Where do I find my MAC Address (i've heard of it before though) and which page exactly do I configure in?In uTorrent it says UPnP is enabled: [09:57:56] UPnP: Discovered new device: http://192.168.1.1:5431/uuid:0016-b7da-fd1d20068dc/WANIPConnection:1And I do know how to port forward but what difference does it make. DMZ is just quicker.
Firon
Did you even re-flash it with Thibor?
Invy
No I haven't I still have v4.30.2. (That's the default firmware right?) No one told me anything about it.Where do I get this Thibor version? Somewhere reliable preferably...edit: Ok I found what seems the one site to download it from: http://www.thibor.co.uk/I don't know which one to download. None say for WRT54GL v4.x.Thanks for any help.EDIT: ok nevermind I think I found it. hopefully everything goes right.EDIT: ok firmware flash went fine. at least I think _^.So now what? I want to enter the mac address somewhere, but where? I see the mac address under STATUS > ROUTER (it says this is the mac address that my ISP sees it as). And also I see two more mac addresses in STATUS > Device List. Thanks for any help.
Firon
The WRT54GL is a v1 router. 4.x is the firmware version, which has nothing to do with the hardware revision.MAKE SURE THAT YOU ERASED THE NVRAM AND RESTORED FACTORY DEFAULTS.And entering your MAC has nothing to do with forwarding the port (unless you want to use Static DHCP, which is a whole 'nother story). Invy
Hmm well I installed the one that is for the CL7A,CL7B serial number since that is what my router is. I didn't erase the RAM and restore the factory settings neither and everything seemed to work out fine. I can already see a difference with this new firmware. No disconnects overnight or anything. So I guess i'm good? Hopefully I don't jinx it. >_<So what was this osmosis user talking about saying I can make my IP static by using the mac address? Smoke
I recently got a D-Link DGL-4100 Gaming Router, the wired version. I've noticed a MASSIVE improvement compared to my old Microsoft MN-500. And even though I was skeptical of the Gamefuel, it really works.
Invy
I take back what I had said about the WRT54GL. Since I installed the HyperWRT firmware, I have had zero disconnects and it has been running smooth as hell. But just watch i'm going jinx it and it's gonna crash on me.
