LycoLoco
As of recent my dad has been complaining about my bittorrent usage, saying that it is killing the network, even when I have the upload speeds set to 10k/sec and download to 30k/sec. We are on a 5meg/768k cable connection, so honestly there is no logical reason for this to be happening. I have just started to use the Quality of Service shaping in the DD-WRT firmware for my Linksys WRT54GS, but got to wondering whether or not it would even do anything if the traffic were to be encrypted, since it wouldn't see the encrypted traffic as BitTorrent traffic. Obviously I don't want to get throttled by my ISP (Carolina Road Runner), but if I have to turn it off to get QoS working then so be it. Thanks in advance! silverfire
QoS IS packetshaping, and it's what encryption was designed to beat. In short, if you use encryption, expect QoS to be unable to classify it. If you really need to, you need to set QoS to shape unclassified traffic if you're using encryption. Another thing you should try is turning off BitTorrent and seeing if your dad still complains. If he still does, then he's generally just trying to be a royal pain in the ass. LycoLoco
Yeah...I figured that. I don't know what's up with our connection either. When I kill bittorrent, it works fine, but whenever I'm running the client, even if it's throttled to 10k/sec up and 20k/sec down, it still slows everything down. I don't understand how if I throttle it to such minimal speeds it still affects the connection that badly. Anyone have any ideas?
Firon
QoS on DD-WRT gave me poor results and caused major slowdowns. DD-WRT itself did too.May want to try turning QoS off, as well as switching to Thibor.
LycoLoco
Hmm, I haven't heard of thibor, but some time when my family isn't using the network, I'll check it out.
Switeck
Have you tried disabling UPnP and DHT in µTorrent? And what's your half-open connection limit set to?
LycoLoco
I haven't disabled either one, and my half-open connection limit is set to 8. I'll try disabling UPnP, but I've got the ports forwarded as well. How would port forwarding kill the connection?
Switeck
Port forwarding PLUS UPnP active might cause problems.DHT is only an issue if on crap hardware...which is all too common.
