Question about the U Flag

Hello,

I tried doing a search to see if this had been covered and was unable to locate anything and I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post it but here goes. :-)

I'm trying to upload something and the peers that are downloading seem to be having problems connecting or downloading.

Several of them have a "U" under the flag column.

u = Peer wants your client to upload, but your client doesn't want to (interested and choked)

Why would my client not want to? And how can I free this up?

Also, in looking through the FAQs I find this. How do I load it? Sorry to appear dimwitted but I don't understand. There's no flags.conf in my %AppData%\uTorrent folder on my C drive.

What is flags.conf?

It is a simple text file that specifies flag order (necessary when using either µTorrent's internal flag list or your own flags.bmp) and maps hosts to specific countries. You can only map .net and .com domains to a country. The format is domain.com|CC (CC being country code). You can use this flags.conf, created by chaosblade, Firon and other members of the IRC channel and forums, to modify or simply use (last updated 11/21/05). Press Ctrl Shift R to make µTorrent load it without restarting. Place it in %AppData%\uTorrent for it to work.

The flag named 00 is used to automatically display unmapped .com/.net with the US flag. This requires having a duplicate US flag (or whatever you would like to use) in the flags.bmp. The internal flag list already has this.

Note, this cannot be used with peer.resolve_country.

Thanks

I don't think it's set too low. I used Jon's guide or formula for setting the speed according to my UL and DL speeds, then it ticked in the figures and I just had to plug them in.

Should we not use that? It's in one of the threads for increasing your speed.

Thanks for your help.

Probably just some guy espousing the 85% rule.

U = Uploading.

u = Choked.

You mentioned U, but are you just looking for general info on u? Besides the mentioned reasons, you may have hit your per-torrent limit, or you may be already uploading to someone who is also uploading heavily and choking someone who isn't - the protocol prioritizes uploading to good uploaders. Super-seeding just enforces that suggestion. Or the client may select a peer who asks for pieces the swarm is light on versus a peer who's only missing pieces the swarm is full of.
