I had this problem and after a night of head scratching and a bold spot beginning to appear discovered that problem was Roxio 10 and the real time media watching thing in the task tray. As soon as i closed it the problem went away. Good luck

On some torrents, I was able to start and stop this problem by using the uTorrent "Disable Windows caching of disk" options. Enabling them made the problem go away. Disabling them made the problem appear. Doesn't work on all torrents, though.

If anyone is reading this 2005 post as I did in 2009, I think I may have an answer. It worked for me at least. So I hope it works for you.

The answer to this error on my end was the fact that I had my Virtual image viewer, for iso's, on the particular iso that I was d/l. I was trying to get a quick peek at it to see if it was in fact the iso that I needed and left it on. Once I unmounted it....Wha La! Magic. It's all good. So I hope this work for you eager learners. OUT!!

Maybe this is helpful to others... but if you're running Vista, I was having problems with the Indexing Service that was running. I don't really use the search much, so I just set the 'Windows Search' Service to manual and stopped the service.

Fixed my problems with this error.

I didnt have this problem. I´m working with vista. No Google Desktop on my PC. It seems that everything started when I updated to 1.8.2 and I started to get the error message. I tried the disko flush, i disabled the windows search for 15 minutes. I tried everything with no success. Anyone has an idea.

If the problem is with 1.8.2 version. How can I downgrade (to check if that´s the problem)

THX GUYS this helped me very much. i had the same problem and and that problem was caused by damn ROXIO MEDIA who i recently installed on my computer. Even i remove roxio from sturtup still when i log on the computer i have roxio.exe in task manager. I kill that process and everything is working fine

Definitely the cause of the problem is Google Desktop.

So, this is what I did:

1. From Google Desktop, exclude indexing at Drive\Directory level. It still works at Directory level exclusion for me.

For those who may be having this problem but not using Google Desktop, probably you should use Unlocker to find out which application or process is hooking onto your download folder.

Once you know, then it will be easy to decide if you wish to disable or uninstall it if it conflicts with uTorrent.

Hope this helps. It is nothing new from info in the posts here but this serves as a reinforcement that the above mentioned solution/approach works for another person like me.

You can probably disable the service in start - run - services.msc but that's about all I'm sure of.

Here goes nothing. Hope you guys can help. This is driving me insane.

I've tried shutting down the Windows Search and I've tried moving the downloaded files to another dir, but to no avail. Also, I have been using uTorrent with much pleasure, up to now, downloading things without a problem.

Edit; BTW, I ran unlocker and it seems explorer.exe is the only program other than uTorrent using these particular files.

This thread was four years ago. I'm having the very same problem, although I have no Google anything running on my computer. When downloading a torrent about every three minutes it stops dead and the red status goes across the Availability: line and I have to Restart it. On the Status line says: "Error: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process". What other process is accessing the files I'm trying to download? They don't show up where I can find them.

Reading these six pages of information and trying every suggestion and nothing worked. It took me three days and I was only about 50% finished downloading. In fact it got worse, to the point where I was seriously considering abandoning uTorrent all together. Then I decided to reread this thread and check off each suggestion. When I read to "set diskio.flush_files to *false" I didn't do it because it seemed to be beyond my scope and then I read that it worked for several members. For those who need a more detailed guide… In uTorrent go to Options then Preferences then Advanced then on the right scroll down to diskio.flush_files then click False on the bottom then Apply then OK and then completely close uTorrent and reopen it and your downloads should be unimpeded, It took me three days to download a little less than 50% and about 20 minutes to download the rest. I'm seeding it as I write this.
