scheduler qs - does it do background activity/leakage

hi all,

i noticed a peculiar "error" when using utorrent.

BACKGROUND OF THE PROBLEM

-----------------------------

It is that my isp allots free hours between 2am-8am.

Utorrent is scheduled to download during those hours.

I use a dsl router on a 256kbps speed.

I generally leave the router on at around 11.30pm before i go to sleep. The dialing mode to access the isp is "router dialing mode".

Thus about 2.5hrs are left before the free hours begin at 2am.

I use router dialing for reasons that when i dial through windows i get disconnected quite often and the output received through utorrent is very low. i get 670mb between 2-8am in router dialing as against 200-300mb when i dial through windows. Thus i opt for router dialing to get connected

to the isp.

ERROR NOTICED

-------------------

Now i noticed while going through the usage log records of the isp, the following.

When the session is connected before the free hours begins, say connected at 12.30am and say disconnected at 5am. Suppose in that period about 200mb was the data transfer. THE ISP RECORDS always shows a usage higher than what it should be. for eg it showed yesterday the following: [pls paste the same in excel to get a clear view]

---------------------------

if u between 23:45pm to 3:11 am for that session it shows the data transfer of 49013 kb ...... which according to me is WRONG. Becoz other than UTORRENT, there was nothing else set to download. NO WINDOWS UPDATE, NO ANTIVIRUS UPDATE, either.NO OTHER PROGRAMS EITHER WERE OPENED. MAXIMUM UPDATE CAN BE OF JAVA, WINDOWS DEFENDER but that too i have set to manual. And all those are updated and currently no new updates have been released.

System is also cheked for virus.

THUS this figure of 49mb data transfersounds quite surprising.

THOUGH I DONT SET TO DOWNLOAD DAILY , BUT DAY BEFORE ALSO UTORRENT WAS SET TO RUN AND IT SHOWED A FIGURE OF 55MB.

SIMILARLY A WEEK BACK ALSO, THE LAST 3 SESSIONS WITH a gap of about 3-4 days showed the same [33,42,38 mb respectively].

NOTE PLEASE: ALL THESE FIGURES ARE ONLY FOR THE SESSION WHICH BEGINS BEFORE THE FREE HOURS AND GETS DISCONNECTED IN THE FREE HOURS. THUS THERE WILL BE ONLY 1 SUCH SESSION. dURING THE FREE HOURS U CAN VERY WELL SEE THE ISP CALCULATES THE SAME CORRECTLY AS ZERO.

ISSUES TO BE LOOKED-:

NOW, THAT CAN BE THE FOLLOWING.

1. PRESENCE OF A VIRUS,ETC...... the system is clean and also regularly cheked. Also the output i receive through utorrent is also good which thus negates the doubt that a virus etc is downloading and i am not getting any data.

2.ISP IS RECORDING THE SESSION WRONG.......here i am at a failure. Talking with the isp is of no use at my place. They are always putting the blame on the user side, and say that their system is perfect. Thus i have very little option to argue with them. Though in the logs u can see that the free hours are accounted properly as '0'.

3.UTORRENT ..... The scheduler is set to download only between 2-8am, balance during the whole day it is set to 'TURN OFF'.

had the data transfer in those hours before the free hours been say miniscule figure, i could have perhaps left it out, but such a huge figures of 40mb+ leaves me in a big doubt.

Also yesterday I HAD KILLED MOST PROCESSES IN THE TASK MANAGER, EXCEPT THE WINDOWS DEFAULT like svchost, etc.

So my doubt came over UTORRENT as to even when it is set to scheduler does it do any background downloading??? otherwise i find no way of justifying those huge download figures shown to me in those unscheduled hours.

I am just trying to look into this aspect as well, though not ignoring any other possibilities too.

As i am a lay guy, i dont know whether leaving the net on results in such huge data transfers even though no upload/download activity is going on!

pls help me out as to how to go about through this now.

regards

U wrote,

Did you have DHT enabled?

Even with DHT disabled, some download bandwidth is needed for all the seed+peer traffic just to know what to upload next...and to who.

-----

dht is disabled

but i want to know with dht disabled will the bandwith required be so high as in this case of 49mb in 3 hrs with nothing else going on.

To your other qs of tweaking, i have only so far tweaked UTORRENT for that tcpip patcher.

netmaxhalfopen = 20 [default is 8]

Connection etc i have not tweaked for as i said, i get good speeds using UTORRENT. My files are getting completed well. i get good speeds.

but even before doing the tcpip patching , in 3 sessions i have observed the same problem in that last penultimate session .
