bluefiberoptics
I have a Wireless G Linksys Router with the latest firmware and I was wondering if I would get better performance when Bit Torrenting and surfing if I used the QoS built-into the Linksys router? I set the first port on the router to the highest priority and the others with low. Is this a good thing?
vurlix
That wouldn't change performance much. Instead, you could give higher priority to TCP port 80 so that web surfing is not interrupted by bittorrent.

Seems like web browsing is a little more responsive now.

spriseris
messing with my Linksys QoS and setting port 80 to highest and my utorrent port to high.. seemed like a great idea.. but it did strange things to my currently running torrents and all 3 of their download rates dropped to 0 for a few moments. strange. Firon
That's not really sufficient...you need to use install a level-7 packet filter into the router and configure it for BT traffic, much like ISPs do to throttle traffic.
spriseris
i was thinking something along those lines.it seems like using the Linksys QoS settings will pretty much negate any chance at effective torrenting. the web browsing sure was more responsive though. Firon
it's actually pretty easy to install the l7-filter into a linksys router, so long as you got decent firmware. configuring it is another matter, though...
Klaus_1250
L7-filtering may give problems when you have a very fast connection, SOHO-routers are not equipped to handle it at very high speeds. QoS should not only make things like browsing more responsive, it should also allow you to download at full rate while using more than 80% of your upstream bandwidth. Personally, I use QoS for SSH and VOIP.
spriseris
i was thinking of getting the Sveasoft firmware.
1c3d0g
No, I seriously recommend not getting the Sveasoft firmware, there are much better options out there. spriseris
any personal recommendations on whose you like more? i was already decided on one of those two before i saw your post
Firon
tofu is for G/GL ONLY, thibor is for GS ONLY. if you use the wrong one, you'll brick the router (but you can fix it yourself with TFTP)I have a G, so I use tofu
1c3d0g
Firon: I heard DD-WRT is the best...what do you have to say about that?
Klaus_1250
I use Sveasoft Alchemy (still waiting for Talisman on a v1.1) but am interested in changing firmware to DD-WRT. What would DD-WRT offer in favor of Sveasoft?

Klaus_1250
I checked Linksysinfo a few times before. I'm not just really interested in all the bells and whistles, but also how they compare internally and which software (busybox, udhcpd, etc) they use. The stock software and broadcom drivers from the Linksys-firmware are quite bugged, but so are some in the firmware's. Using Sveasoft Alchemy, upnp occasionally dies on me, dhcp does not always work, etc.
Firon
Use HyperWRT or DD-WRT, they're both good firmware replacements. Haven't had any problems to date with HyperWRT.
