Greybeard Posted December 21, 2006 Report Posted December 21, 2006 Those who are (forced to be) concerned about their upload/download ratio all know that the one thing, which can seriously boost your ratio, is to download only pieces with as few seeders as possible. This ensures that a piece, once downloaded, will be shared with as many fellow leechers as possible. That, in turn, translates into an improved ratio. In order to help those folks, it would be beneficial to implement a feature allowing downloaders to restrict the number of seeders of downloaded pieces for a given torrent, similarly to how it is currently possible to restrict the upload and download bandwidth on a per-torrent basis.
Switeck Posted December 21, 2006 Report Posted December 21, 2006 µTorrent already makes some attempts to get rare pieces first/early/quickly.Any more aggressive attempts to do this might backfire if most everyone tried to use it at once. It's sort of like if everyone downloaded the 1st and last chunk in a torrent before trying to download any other part of the torrent.
Greybeard Posted December 21, 2006 Author Report Posted December 21, 2006 µTorrent already makes some attempts to get rare pieces first/early/quickly.Perhaps, but that is not what happens in reality. At present, the more seeders offer a piece, the more likely the program is to download that piece. There may be some favoring of rare pieces, but this is unable to counteract the attraction toward availability. It's sort of like if everyone downloaded the 1st and last chunk in a torrent before trying to download any other part of the torrent.I would think it's the exact opposite. The feature would prevent people from downloading the same pieces, especially in the initial seeding period. As I hinted, this feature is thought as a helping hand to those who are at the lower end of the food chain on trackers, which require a minimum ratio. Without a ratio boost feature, it can be extremely difficult to sustain a good ratio unless you have several GB of up/downloads under your belt.
Xu Posted December 23, 2006 Report Posted December 23, 2006 If you want to seriously boost your ratio you either must:1. Download slower2. Upload faster3. Seed for longerThere's no magic piece ordering that will save you on a private ratio tracker if you're 1 of 3 leeches on a torrent with 100+ seeds each pushing 40-200 k/sec. Just leave your torrents seeding for a few weeks and your ratio will improve.Bittorrent already favors rare pieces.
mkdumb Posted December 23, 2006 Report Posted December 23, 2006 u can check what i wrote herehttp://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=17782for me its a problem, and thats why i ban temporarly µTorrent clients sometimes
Switeck Posted December 23, 2006 Report Posted December 23, 2006 Initial seeding mode, were it a little more aggressive at uploading, would be a possible solution.
µtorrent-Guest Posted December 23, 2006 Report Posted December 23, 2006 mkdumb as i understand your explaination in the other post it is something completely different then what the OP is articulating here!
mkdumb Posted December 24, 2006 Report Posted December 24, 2006 ok, i miss understood something maybe :/
