Legal or Not....that is the question..

Hi

Im a bit confused again,I see a lot of closed off topics due to illegal trackers, illegal files and the like.

All this makes sense, as in a lot of countrys downloading copyrighted stuff is bad, and the ones where there is a grey area, its just a matter of time and money as far as I can see, including my country.

But...

Im showing my ignorance here or my naivety but how many torrents are there to download that are legal.

Ok I know everyone comments on download from Openoffice, get a Linux OS and the like, but surely once you have one or the other, what more can you download, to put it another way, how can anyone use a torrent based client for any more than a week and then use it for updates for any particular app/os. ? and that cant be that often and if it is, how long does it take to download...

And Im unsure about these sites as well, whenever I have downloaded a Linux thing, there are no ratios, the only Ratio systems I have seen are on what would be called "Bad Sites"...

So I suppose the question is, is this all Hypocritical ?

Not starting a flaming war, just wondering, like I said its more my ignorance than anything else.

Nice one

6 Posts and thats the answer

You already knew the answer, you just wanted us to admit it. Hey, we do admit it, however that doesn't mean that there are no legal uses. I find I always take the torrent option for free software if possible because it's much faster than a single threaded http connection.

As was said, what people download is their business. No one needs to know. People have a right to ask how to speed up their downloads without stating what they are downloading.

yeah ok

both answers are true.

So basically its - a screwdriver is used for screwing screws, but if you use it to break into a house its not our fault.

Fair enough, I thought someone would have given links to a site that has legal torrents that mantains a seeding ratio, they cant exsist then, but thanks for your answers.

:D

I know someone who lives on a big hill, and his only broadband internet connection is a unreliable wireless one, so I use a single seed/self-tracked torrent to send files to him, since other methods might fail in the middle and other problems may occur. It's the easiest way since bittorrent has built-in hash checking and other safety features to make sure the file gets there safe and sound.

It all depends on the laws enforced by your government. Typically, copyrighted material which you do not own and is licensed in your country is illegal to download. As any file distribution medium, what you do is at your own discretion -- and risks.

I think this thread would be better, with LINKS to legal torrent content? :)

hmm, what else. I know there's a bunch :P

Have you seen this?

http://www.whitsoftdev.com/ssft/

Pretty neat little app :) and, probably not as "extreme" as setting up a bt tracker on your comp. :)

FEATURES:

Only one computer needs to be able to accept incoming TCP/IP connections; the other just needs outbound connectivity

Files can be transferred in either direction, regardless of the direction of TCP connection

Capable of operating over network address translators (NATs) using port forwarding

Partially transferred files can be resumed if the partial file matches the file being sent

Files are automatically hashed during transfer using an MD5 algorithm

Hashes on the sending and receiving sides are compared to ensure the file was transferred without errors

Supports very large files (up to about 4 petabytes; note that you must be using NTFS to have files larger than 2 GB)
