roberto_baggio7
hey guys! i just downloaded the latest version of utorrent and i seem to have problems.i'm running it on an old 500mhz celeron computer with ONLY windows 98SE and utorrent installed on it (no firewall or p2p software). The problem is that after a few hours of downloading, the computer freezes but i can still move the mouse arround (i can't click anything). i'm also using a wireless b linksys router but the computer running utorrent is plugged via network cable. the only settings i changed in utorrent is the upload speed is set to 20kb/s and the share ration to 50%. is there something else i should change?please help!! Ultima
Have you set the global maximum number of connections to less than 100 (perhaps 80, or 50 even)? Windows 98, by default, can't handle more than 100 connections simultaneously. You can change the limit (the MaxConnections key), but it's still recommended that you lower the number of connections in µTorrent.
roberto_baggio7
thanks ultima! i just changed the max connections to 100 and for now it's running fine.
Ultima
Er, it should be set to less than 100 if the limit in the Registry key is at default (100), otherwise, there's still a chance it'll be problematic.
roberto_baggio7
hey ultima, you were right. it was freezing at 100 so i changed it to 50 and it's still freezing (it freezes less often but still...). can it be something else? i really don't want to reboot my computer every 8 hours. Ultima
Did you increase the limit in the Registry?
roberto_baggio7
no, do i have to change it? how do i do that and value do i put? i nerver played arround in the registries
Ultima
Start > Run > regeditCarefully browse to the correct location in the Registry tree on the left (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP). Now, after you click on the MSTCP "directory," look at the right-hand pane, and look for the MaxConnections value. It should be at 100 right now -- increase it to perhaps... 200? Then confirm the changes, and restart your computer.
roberto_baggio7
i didn't have the MaxConnections key in the MSTCP directory so i added it. i'll let you know if it works.

Ultima
Are you sure you're not running any of the incompatible software as listed in the FAQ?
roberto_baggio7
well, there is only win98SE, utorrent and VNC installed. thats it. no firewall, no p2p software and no anti-virus. i just formated the computer to only use utorrent on it. i guess my only choices is to either install xp (which a 500Mhz wont be ideal for xp) or use another torrent client. anyways, if you have anymore ideas, let me know and i'll try! i don't feel like installing xp and i love utorrent!lol
Lord Alderaan
I had XP running on a 133Mhz machine. Just use a stripped down version. Disable any services you won't need and it'll work decently. If ur only gona use it for µtorrent it won't be much trouble.
