Falcon4
That's not a uTorrent problem either (not being able to). It's just like giving out a fake phone number to everyone then wondering why you're not getting any calls back. Duh.And on the outgoing side, it's just like caller ID. You can't call any number without giving out your own number automatically. The Internet is surprisingly similar to a phone network.
Ultima
Ah, that's a good analogy... Not sure why I never thought of it (yes, I was trying to think of one for someone else a while ago xD).
Falcon4
Even further to continue that great analogy (which I thought up forever ago... lol),The port setup on a PC is a lot like a work phone network. The workplace only has one number but a lot of phones inside the building (let's ignore for a moment the analogy to NAT routing here... which also works on another level with this analogy). When you call the office you could pick an extension, which is a lot like the port numbers. If you pick an office and an extension that doesn't exist, you get a good ol' "the number you are calling has been disconnected". This is like a router that totally removes you from existence to a certain port number - stealth mode, some call it. Or even an IP address that isn't online. If you pick to call an office that exists but an extension that does not, you get a ring that goes on and on and on because nobody is on the other end - that's like getting "connection refused" errors from an online PC with nothing listening on that port. If you pick an office AND extension that exists, you get a ring and a person - which is like when you connect to an IP and a port on which a program is listening, like connecting to this website. And then, there's the NAT/operator analogy, which is more useful to BitTorrent. Your router acts like the operator in an office building. In this case, you tell the operator which extension you want to dial, and the operator forwards your call to the appropriate cubicle. In the same way, a router forwards your connection to the appropriate computer on your network. If you don't tell the operator what extension is what cubicle, you don't get anything going through. That's what port forwarding is all about.See how powerful that analogy is?
