What's a good maximum number of downloads to have going on at once?

What's a good maximum number of downloads to have going on at once? There's lots of stuff I'd like to download, so I quickly found myself wondering how many simultaneous downloads I should be running at once. For example, will more simultaneous downloads slow down the rate, to the point where it wouldn't be strategic to download more than a certain amount? And if so, what's a good number to have running at the same time?

I just thought I'd ask so that I know how to make the most of my downloading time, since it looks like I'll be using this for a while.

It depends on the speeds (both download and upload) of your connection.

Most of the time though, running more than 1 is a bad idea.
