Note this variant of the same domain:

All these variants must be included in .conf to be correctly recognised as MX

Well that kinda stinks, when I sort for duplicates it dumps the other 2. So I have to do that one manually :(

Hope there aren't any others like that.

Updated .conf

Yes, I can imagine what dumb work may need inserting domains manually...

I just created a separate section at the top for domains that have multiple capitalizations. Hopefully that doesn't mess anything up.

Updated the .conf while I was at it.

subdomains cannot be considered. But i confirm that exatt.net is an indian company according to the webpage. Only the whois info points to US.

Another similiar issue:

Everyone who is checking whois infos of domains should take a closer look at the webpage if the only address goes to Herndon, US. This is the address of networksolutions.com. Some domains don't have their own address entered. If there is now webpage use a visual traceroute for a good guess.

I think that should be implemented the checking of subdomain, taking in consideration the big issue with the domain *.inter.net:

ca.inter.net for Canada

de.inter.net for Germany

ch.inter.net for Switzerland

Disagree on the implementation.

Would like to want to check every peer? Considering subdomains would be much work.

Of course, there are dozens of ISP that are available in different countries. It is not always so obvious like in your example. "whois" also doesn't work on the subdomain level. So you won't see a difference if you check domains with subdomains and you have to check each peer manually by tracerouting. And still this is no guarantee to get it right.

The flags are a fun feature. Don't exaggerate it.

I was thinking on a different way of work made by the utorrent program, not the whois service: the program should consider the reverse DNS a string text to check & then loads the proper flag based on domains listed in .conf . I think is not difficult to implement this for subdomain too. Simple.

I know that the implementation of looking up subdomains is trivial.

But now you just check the whois entry and that's it. If you want to check subdomains, where do you want to look? If the ISP was so kind to give a hint in the domain name, you are lucky, but this is very rare. Otherwise you have to traceroute almost every peer you see. There is no other way to tell where a peer is located.

And if you look at the common names of peers it is more often the case that the type of connection is the subdomain.

adsl.alicedsl.de

adsl.euphonynet.be

cable.infonet.ee

Also many peer names make no sense at all, they are just the encoded IP or a node number.

If you think, i misunderstand you, please give an example how it should work.

Example:

I've found a swedish company named Astrozeneca that have multiple location in worldwide.

I've met 2 of them in utorrent

The first was showing this reverse DNS: MCLCXIIX.americas.astrozeneca.com (a mexican location )

The other one simply: astrozeneca.com (swedish location)

In the .conf--->

americas.astrozeneca.com|MX

astrozeneca.com|SE

Pratically, utorrent should be forced to reading and compare the string from the .conf to utorrent peer list in this way: SUBDOMAIN.DOMAIN

Yepp, i understood you right.

As i said, it is useless most of the time and requires a lot more work to maintain the list because whois doesn't work for subdomains and you have to trace every peer.

As for your example. The companys domain is registered in Sweden. But the server for www.astrozeneca.com is located in the UK. According to their website they are also located in

Antigua

Bahamas

Barbados

Belize, Central America

Bermuda

Canada

Cayman Islands

Costa Rica

Cuba

Dominican Republic

El Salvador

Guatemala

Honduras Republic

Jamaica

Mexico

Netherland Antilles

Nicaragua

Trinidad

in North & Central America. And there are also locations in Latin America. I doubt that the subdomain "americas" refers only to Mexico.

I once had a peer where the domain was of company in the US. The administrative contact was somewhere near Indonasia and the peer was located somewhere else again.

IMHO subdomain checking is useless most of the time, takes much more work to check. My guess is that it will never be implemented and i second that.
