Bluum Posted April 8, 2007 Report Posted April 8, 2007 Hi, I have tried to port forward through my 3Com 3CRWER200-75 Router (connected by cable) and my Topcom Xplorer 871BT ADSL modem.the thing is that it doesn't work.In adition, my modem seems to reboot every now and then without any pattern ever since I started using uTorrent...I have converted from BitComet, so I use the same port as I used there, and that is port 7115. Windows Firewall is opened, so the problem isn't there. My download speeds are relatively OK, (between 15 and 20kB\s on a 2,5MB\s line usually), but the program tells me that port 7115 isn't opened. So my Question is: how do I forward this, since I don't connect directly to a Modem, but throug a router first.I followed the guide for 3Com 3CRWER100-75 which went fine I think.I set a static ip on my computer, and used that ip as the "To IP adress. 192.162.1.XX where XX is the numbers my computer usesI think the problem lies in the modem, but I can't find any way to correctly forward the port 7115.There is only one place where I can use the setting "forward" in a rule, and first of all, I don't know whether I should use my computers ip or my routers ip. Secondly, I loose internet connectoin when I forward port 7115 TCP and UDP to any of those ip adresses. So what the hell should I do?
Switeck Posted April 9, 2007 Report Posted April 9, 2007 Try this (for the internet interruption part):Internet Interruption or Slow Speeds?http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=15992
Bluum Posted April 9, 2007 Author Report Posted April 9, 2007 Wel, I lowered the max uload speed, and now the trouble is gone.Port 7115 opens sucessfully when I connect my computer directly to my modem, so the router is the problem.
Switeck Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 If lowering your upload speed helps, you may be able to raise the upload speed slightly by reducing global and per-torrent connections as well as half open max value in µTorrent. Having 100's of connections at once is of little help if you cannot download (and upload!) at 100's of KiloBYTES/sec. It's easier to max out upload speed with few connections than download. Download is hit-or-miss and depends on seeds+peers having both high upload speeds AND allowing high upload speeds in their torrent client settings. Even a fast connection can be a leecher is the person using it refuses to share. For forwarding a router, you are forwarding an incoming port (the one you use in µTorrent) to your computer's LAN ip...typically 192.168.x.x (where x can be 0-255.) Your computer needs to be set up to use a static LAN ip, rather than be 'told' what its LAN ip is by the router. The router should be 'told' what its internet ip address is by the modem though...unless the modem is actually a router too! (If that's the case, it gets to be a real mess. But since you get the green light when your computer is directly connected to your modem, your modem almost certainly doesn't contain a router.)
Bluum Posted April 11, 2007 Author Report Posted April 11, 2007 My computer now has the static ip 192.168.1.2; uses 192.168.1.1 as gateway.MODEM:(Configuration>Virtual Server:) My modem is set to open for trafic on port 7115 TCP and UDP for 192.168.1.2. There is one more space to fil in numbers though, and that is the "Private Port" which currently is marked blank. The modem uses the ip 10.0.0.254. (LAN ip)*DHCP Server is "enabled"*DHCP address pool selection is ser to "user defined"*DHCP Gateway Selection is set to "Automatic"*DHCP Relay is "Disabled"*User Mode is "Multi-user"Perhaps I should turn of the DHCP Server on the modem, since it is activated in the router? And since the modem only has to deal with the routers ip...--------------------------------------------------------------------------------My Router is set to use a static ip in the "Internet Settings" menu. This ip is 10.0.0.155.ISP Gateway address and Primary DNS is set to 10.0.0.254; subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 like anywhere else.In the "LAN Settings" menu; my router is set with these settings:(LAN Settings>Unit Configuration:) IP Address: 192.168.1.1Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0The Router acts as DHCP Server "Enabled"IP Pool Start/end Address: [192.168.1.]2/200The Router acts as DHCP relay "not Enabled"(LAN Settings>Static DHCP Assignment:) No settings used, everything at factory deafult.(LAN Settings>DHCP lease table) My computer is there with the ip 192.168.1.2, but the square with the text "Fixed" over is NOT checked.Under the "Firewall" menu, in the Virtual Server part; "Utor1" is set as application name, and port 7115 to 7115 TCP & UDP is "Enabled" on ip 192.168.1.2(Firewall>Special Apps:) Nothing used(Firewall>SPI:) Nothing used(Firewall>QoS:) Nothing used(Firewall>Internet Access Policy:) Nothing Used(Firewall>Content Filter:) Nothing Used(Firewall>URL Filter:) Nothing UsedIn the "Advanced" menu, there is nothing used in the two first sub-categories; "Static Route" and "RIP".In the "Advanced>DDNS" part, DDNS is set to "Disabled".In the "Advanced>Security" part, the following three have their boxes checked:"IPSec Passthrough""L2TP Passthrough""PPTP Passthrough"The Following three in the same category has not their boxes checked:"Enable universal plug and play""Allow PING from the Internet""Disable NAT""Remote Administration" is "Disabled"In the following sub-categories, nothing is used: "ProxyARP", "1 to 1 NAT" and "SNMP".--------------------------------------------------------------------------------I hope this wil make it easier to help me solve this little problem. My way is a little chaotic, because I just turn on or off by feeling, so I often try one thing several times. Thanks for you replies so far; and I hope you could help me some more. EDIT: I should probably mention that it doesn't work when it is like this. I have Internet connection, but port 7115 is stil not open.
Switeck Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 All your problems may go away if you can figure out how to set that modem in bridge mode or port forward the modem to your router.Your computer needs to be outside the ip pool start/end address for DHCP. So increase this;IP Pool Start/end Address: [192.168.1.]2/200To something like this:IP Pool Start/end Address: [192.168.1.]100/200
Bluum Posted April 12, 2007 Author Report Posted April 12, 2007 I enabled the setting "Bridge" on the modem, which alone didn't help.I tried to change my computers ip adress to 192.168.1.234 when the ip pool still was ...2/200, but that did not help either. Then I remembered that I forgot to open the 7115 port for my new ip, so I changed that from 2 to 234.But that didn't change anyhing either, so I'm about where I started. And by the way; when uTorrent test my port 7115, it test it on a different ip; propably my external ip.Its 83. something.Am I opening for the wrong ip or something?
Switeck Posted April 13, 2007 Report Posted April 13, 2007 µTorrent checks your internet ip address, not your computer's LAN ip address. If everything is port forwarded correctly and there are no blocking firewalls, then your computer should be able to receive the test ok and reply back.It sounds like you're still missing a firewall that needs configuring. What kinds of antivirus, antispyware, and "security suite" programs are you running? (They may need configuring too!)
Bluum Posted April 13, 2007 Author Report Posted April 13, 2007 I use NOD32 and Windows firewall, that's all.But since it works when directly connected to the modem, it's probably not the computer anyway.I think I'll go thoug all the setting again and check if they are as they should be, and I'll post if I find out somethink new.EDIT: Great news!I reset both my modem and my ruoter and did the following changes:Set modem to bridge mode.Set router to static internet modeSet computer with staic ipOpened port in the router with for my computers ipOpened port in the modem for my routers ip.Now it works! Thanks for all the help Switeck, it really helped!
Switeck Posted April 13, 2007 Report Posted April 13, 2007 It's a pain to have that many firewalls and routers between your computer and internet...but you can't always do anything about them except learn how to configure them all.Since I have a simple cablemodem and router...but no software firewall or antivirus...my setup is MUCH simpler than most people's. I use various system monitoring tools to protect against viruses. Antivirus software is often only good against YESTERDAY'S viruses, not tomorrow's! I've been the victim of numerous zero-day attacks. (Called zero-day because no antivirus company has an official "cure" for the virus often for days or even weeks after it begins.)I cannot emphasize strongly enough that relying entirely on NOD32 to protect your system from viruses, trojans, and spyware will probably bite you at some point. Especially so if your web browser is Internet Exploiter (...I mean Explorer). Even Windows firewall will help a little in that regard, but lots of stuff masquerades as "Internet Explorer" traffic and gets passed through the firewall without a hitch.
Bluum Posted April 14, 2007 Author Report Posted April 14, 2007 I use Opera and stay away from sites I know is on the edge.NOD32 takes care of viruses, while Ad-aware SE Personal and Spybot S&D clean up spywares.I'm kind of semi-advanced computer user, so I know what to steer away from.Got one virus once, but never again!Lost 15GB of music and tons of movies that way, not ot mention important dokuments and all my savegames.Another thing I found out that time, is that en axternal HDD is very nice, since you don't loose your data even if your internal HDD gets a virus.EDIT: Something weird is going on now.Ever since I started configuring my network, MSN and hotmail doesn't work. Not even web messenger.I don't know what the problem is, but I think it has something to do with my configuration of the router and modem. And even thoug uTorrent says everything is fine, I get crappy download speeds.I got an error with UPnP, so I Turned that off, but that didn't change anything.Right now I dl. one torrent with 8 (8)/30(117) with about 5 kB\s. Upload speed is around 2kB\s.This is still on a 2500/350 kbps ADSL, and I have tried to use every speed option in the program, but the changes are marginal.I'm gonna test connecting directly to my modem again later tonight, maybe that helps.EDIT2: When direclty connected to the modem, I get much higher up and download speeds, and MSN\Hotmail works. But when connected throug router, MSN\Hotmail doesn't work, and my up\dn speeds are slow.Any ideas why?
