zebulon
Is it an hommage to Day of the Tentacle or old adventure games in general? Or is it just a coincidence?
Animorc
Hadn't noticed that until now =). I haven't played Day of the Tentacle, but it sure do sound like something from an old adventure game.
ColdArmor
It's called THX but I don't know where it's from, but I've heard it everywhere.
ScubaSteve
i dont even have any sound that plays when i open the about box, it used to be the thx bit in previous versions. guessed they removed it.
linx05
Click on the logo. Then you'll hear it. Watch a Star Wars movie and you'll hear the THX sound. That's one of the many movies you'll hear it in any way.
1c3d0g
That tune is called "Deep Note", and yes, it has a long history. It's argueably one of the best artificial (man-made) masterpieces ever created...

Ultima
The THX sound always was "loud," and you can turn your speaker volume down anyway ;P
Xilon
Never noticed that. How is that a masterpeice? :| Sounds pretty uhh... ordinary. On the topic of the about box, is the ripply background effect really necassary? It makes uTorrent look so crap
Ultima
Meh this sounds like it's turning into the discussion that we had last month... No one's going to be staring at the About box 24/7, or even 6 times a day for that matter, so it doesn't really matter how the About box looks. Let the devs have their fun =P(I think it looks alright, by the way)

Venimus
It is supposed to be a "code". Read the story: http://www.thx.com/trailers/And it is "small" because back in 1984 there were no "big" codes. It sound loud because humans hear some of the frequences better than others, actually the too high and too low freq's sound softer. To not sound so loud either the whole sound must be quieter or just the middle part. But in the first case, you wont hear some of the frequences, but in the second case the sound characteristics would be different. In both cases the main purpose of the sound - testing the sound system, won't be applicable.
