All of Virtual Memory consumed by uTorrent

Recommended Posts

I'm running XP and it was working ok with uTorrent 1.6. I did not have port forwarding setup correctly so followed the guide and opened it up successfully. Only problem is now as soon as a torrent gets to the download stage all of my VM is consumed by uTorrent and the PC grinds to a halt within seconds (I just monitor it with Task Manager).

I attempted to block the firewall port again, but made no difference. I then tried v1.6.1 and beta 1.7, both consume all the VM.

I have tried turning DHT on/off and turned on 'override disk cache', no difference.

There is nothing wrong with my router as I have successfully got port forwarding working on my laptop.

Any ideas ?

But if uTorrent is not running there is no load.

I can launch uTorrent fine but as soon as I start a download the VM is consumed in very large chunks, very quickly.

uTorrent has been re-installed, set to default setttings, even started a different torrent. None of this made any difference.

Then it's something else...we're looking for that something else.

That's why I said:

Get either (or both) HijackThis or Process Viewer. Do some research on what all is loading on your computer...because something seems really amiss/bad!

Faulty firewall software will fail to process and close connections properly, and that means anything that opens/closes a LOT of connections can end up consuming a LOT of ram...and then a LOT of VM. µTorrent qualifies as something that opens lots of connections, so it ends up looking like µTorrent's fault.

Did you try Ultima's FAQ?:

What a mess...you sure you need all that Yahoo-related stuff?

You've got quite a few 'file missing' entries. Your OS is linking to files that don't exist -- maybe even for critical tasks!

Have you run Ad Aware or SpyBot Seek and Destroy on your computer?

Could be anything?:

I know it is a mess. Is the PC the kids use. As I said previously my laptop runs uTorrent fine through the same router.

Always run AdAware and Spybot. All clean, except for the usual tracking cookies.

Cyb2k is CyberSitter internet control. (This has been on there a few months, so was working ok with uTorrent)

PDSched.exe runs on my laptop also. PerfectDisk is a defragger.

So, I should delete all the 'file missing' and all the Yahoo stuff for starters? anything else ?

Did a tidy up as suggested. Still no luck with uTorrent

So next I un-installed CyberSitter, problem solved, uTorrent fully working, VM back to manageable limits.

You may want to add CyberSitter to your FAQ of incompatible programs. It was working ok, as I said previously, it has been installed ok for months without conflict with uTorrent. There is obviously however a conflict when settings are changed. The only thing I can think of is when I briefly blocked all instant messenger type programs in the settings (I did not touch the file sharing blocking option). When they were enabled again it must have left something behind that affected uTorrent.

Thanks for your help.
