Main Router hooked up to a Macintosh

I have been trying for a while to get my uTorrent to download faster, and it is always telling me that the port is closed. I figured since I was getting my internet wirelessly, via an Airport Extreme Base Station, which is also connected wirelessly to my father's Mac, that I would simply have to do the whole port forwarding thing on his computer. After finally getting his computer set up with a static ip, and adding a new port like the portforward.com guide said, I came back to my own computer, only to find that nothing had changed. It still says that it's blocked by a firewall or router. If the solution is to completely disable the Windows Firewall, then what is to prevent my computer from getting infected by a virus? I hope that I can get some responses soon, as this is driving me nuts.
