utorrent breaks internet

When I open uTorrent, it works fine for a while. Then, after some random amount of time, my internet shuts down entirely. I can get the internet to work again after I unplug my modem, but this means that I basically can't download anything for more than 5 minutes.

On a possibly related note, I have DSL but my download speeds are always ungodly slow. Sorry if that breaks the "speed issues" sticky but I thought it might be important.
