Computer freezes randomly & completely only when uTorrent is running?!

I have been using uTorrent for several months now, and recently my computer has been freezing/locking up randomly, but it only seems to happen when uTorrent is running. Sometimes it happens seconds/minutes after I start uTorrent, sometimes it will run 2-3 days and suddenly lock up with it. I have tried everything I can think of and I still haven't been able to narrow it down. I'm not saying I'm brilliant or anything but I am a PC Tech and this one has got me beat. I don't know if it's settings with uTorrent, software incompatibility somewhere, ZoneAlarm maybe conflicting (although it freezes even when I turn ZoneAlarm off so I don't think it is the problem), I just don't know anymore. The only common symptoms that I see when my computer freezes are: uTorrent running, & possibly loosing wireless internet connection for a few seconds may trigger it, but I have no clue as to why that would contribute in any way.

I live in an apartment and "borrow" someone else's wireless internet because I am unfortunately a little on the broke side at the moment, so I can't give any router info, but up until recently I have never had this problem so I could really use some help.

First try newest 1.7 beta.

Second turning a firewall off won't work because it still has its system wide hooks in place. Uninstalling ZoneAlarm is the only way to find out if its causing the problem.

Get Process Explorer from sysinternals.com, run it, File > Save, then post the contents of the saved process list in the .txt file here

Ok, so I tried new 1.7 beta w/ firewall still on & same problem, but somehow it really seems that the loss of wireless internet signal even for a second seems to trigger it, whenever the screen is frozen, my wireless signal icon shows not connected, but why would that trigger anything?!

Nothing really interesting in the processes list. Except that it looks like you are running 3 different anti-spyware programs (MsMpEng.exe, Ad-Aware 2007 Service and Spy Sweeper Engine) but this is just a bad idea in general and shouldn't be the cause of this problem.

Wifi being the problem sounds as a real possibility to me although afaik ur OS shouldn't be locking up. Try getting the newest drivers and see if you can try connecting through a other network card (preferably wired).

Ok, so a little more info....

I was a little mistaken...it turns out that it isn't just when uTorrent is running but apparently any bit torrent downloading/client is making my computer lock up. I do not have a wired connection (but i do have the latest drivers for my cards) to try it through so i can't test that, i do have another wireless adaptor i could try, so i guess ill do that. The weird thing is that I haven't changed any hardware or software recently at all that i can think of. The only thing is that i reformatted my computer a few weeks ago, but it worked fine for a while and then one night i woke up to it frozen. So, as you can tell this is a little odd and extremely frustrating. I know this doesn't make it a uTorrent problem, but i still hope i can get some help since it is similar and does involve it.

Any help is very appreciated.

ok, so the problem seems to be with using my Belkin Pre-N Desktop Wireless Card (F5D8000) when downloading bit torrent files. When i use any of my other wireless cards, i don't have a problem. But why would it all of the sudden start giving me problems, i have been using this card for over a year and suddenly it starts freezing my computer? WTF?! This really doesn't seem to make sense, i have tried to reinstall the card over and over again but no change, i have tried looking for old or new drivers for it, but there is only the original release. So if anyone has any idea or has had a similar problem, please help me out here.

I've been having the same problem for the past couple of days and I just found a way to stop the problem. I noticed that there's this suspicious process named "my document.exe" so I terminated the process. After doing so, my computer doesn't freeze anymore when I run µTorrent. Weird. And I don't know how to remove the process from startup so I have to terminate the process each time I turn my computer on.

And we, all those who found the same problem, would be so happy if someone out there teaches us how to remove the said process from startup as I couldn't find an article about it anywhere. "my document.exe"

@Jhei: You're facing a different problem altogether. While DeviousNet's problem seems to be hardware-related, yours seems to be a malware issue.

Check http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=92300 for more help and clean your system using a good AV (such as NOD32 or Kaspersky etc.) and a good anti-spyware tool (such as Spybot SnD or PC Tools Spyware Doctor etc.)

Spyware doctor and NOD32 have known compatibility issues with p2p apps.

Anyway, if it ain't broke, why fix it? My P2P apps purr along very nicely, thank you.

Plus, I always say try something out for yourself and confirm compatibility with your unique mix of hardware and software before passing judgement on something. It's up to Jhei now to decide what's best for his system.

I have the same exact problem as DeviousNet. The difference I have my own broadband internet connection and no router.

It is no malware or anything like that, I kave KIS and Spyware Doctor. It is not my hardware.

I haven't changed anything but all of a sudden out of nowhere my utorrent freezes my computer. The only solution is to shut down the computer by pressing the shutdown button.

Everything else works but when starting utorrent it can work for a couple of seconds then everything freezes.

I know alot on this forum have posted similar or exact problems without getting any help. I have searched and I havent found a single solution, my hopes rely that it will randomly fix itself again.

Im not a computer noob so trust when I am saying this is not an ordinary problem and my hardware is not the problem. Malware is not the problem either and not my computer setup since it have worked for over a year without problems... :/

Dont know why this would help since it has worked before and I havent changed anything. Everything I have has been there before when my computer didnt freeze when dl a torrent. I dont have any crazy settings in uttorent either...

why should I uninstall Kaspersky? would like some more arguments before I take away my AV...

btw yes I have spy sweeper and ad aware but they where there before too and I dont have them active besides when I scan from time to time...only app when startup is KIS and the essential startup apps

Here's another argument.. you have dying hardware. Run a stability test... some people like Prime95, most like some memory tester(s) like memtest86

@23 sorry if I come off as ungrateful but I am a bit annoyed by this problem and when you claim I have failing hardware without any real arguments I have to put the "foot" down so people reading this knows that there is nothing wrong with my hardware.

The problem is Random and if you search as I has alot of people have had the same problem and I havent found a solution yet...

but I will try uninstall KIS and see whats happens. will keep you updated

From what I have found it seems to be a problem with the BT technology that "randomly" causes some sort of DDOS effect on your computer. This because the problem I and many have seems to happen to everyone regardless of OS or torrent client from ubuntu/Vuze to Vista/XP/utorrent/bitcomet or whatever... :/

Yeah, except my computer doesn't freeze, even when I decided to stress test with thousands of connections.

It doesn't happen to everyone. It doesn't even happen to a lot of people. It only happens to a small number of people with really broken software on their systems (usually Zone Alarm, but Kaspersky's been popping up a lot more lately).

So again, remove KIS and reboot.
