More problems with ports..

Ive been down the line of things to do to open a port. Ive even contacted my routers company and couldnt understand the guys accent. Ive done the ENTIRE process at portforward.com TWICE. Created a static IP, And tried to open 2 different ports that were randomly generated by UTorrent. Still no luck. I have a Belkin Model No. F5D7230-4 router with a suddenlink cable modem. Ive turned off my anti-virus software and i have no firewall other than Windows firewall but its been manually configured to "off" for some time now. Ive checked to make sure its still off to.. Everytime i check to see if the port is open, Its not! I have no idea what to do from here and im a semi-noob when it comes to complicated things about computers. I DO know a great deal tho so im not completely blind to what im doing. The very BEST speed i can generate is about 20 kbps. Not sure if ive left anything out buy thats the summary of my problem. Can anybody please help me?!

Update: After playing around with the static IP creation and trying to open more ports ive found where i may have went wrong. First of all i put in the DNS server that was listed when i went to run/ipconfig/all. Instead of using that i used the two (completely different addresses from connections properties) that my routers status had listed.

The second place i may have gone wrong was that i DID in fact have my firewall turned OFF but i DID NOT have the "Local Area Connection" unchecked in the advance tab under my firewall. I believe it may have had a seperate firewall running for my connection. When i turned it off and used the other DNS servers and tested the open port it said that it was working and accepting incoming connections.

Hope this information helps somebody else that went thru everything i tried. If you want further details i can be contacted at jokeman4448@hotmail.com (Not sure if im allowed to post my email but if it wont let me then just contact me via reply to this post.

i am the biggest noob ever when internet is concerned. but i seem to have the exact problem u have had.

my maximum download speed ever on utorrent was 23 kB/s but my speed check suggests that 684Kb/s are possible. most of the time my download speed is at about 10 kB/s

everytime i check wether or not my port is open, it sais no, i have let utorrent generate several different random ports, none are open.

i have also added these ports in my windows firewall to allow them, that did not really work, since my group policy is always set to no.

therefore i have turned the firewall completly off. im using a Motorola SBG 900 wireless surfboard gateway.

if any one could tell me how i increase the speed and open a port that would be greatly appreciated.

Change uTorrent to use a single port (such as 15001). Make sure you open the uTorrent port in your windows firewall, even if it is turned off! MS XP SP2 and Vista always have part of the firewall working. Of course, if you have a router, also open the port there.

Hi guys.

I'm new to this stuff but I think I am beginning to understand some of it. I am using the latest clinet 1.6.1.

I have verison fios the 20/5 package.

I am also using the WRTP54G. This is the linksys the has the vonage telephone ports built in. Not sure if this router is also affected by the issues noted in the FAQ.

First issue I have is that the port forward test always fail. I always have either the status light yellow or red. I followed all the instructions. My linksys router has a very basic firewall that is basically for web filtering. There is no way to turn it off that I saw. After reading this page, I also opened up in the windows firewall, even though I have it turned off.

While my speeds are decent, on some torrents I can get 150-200, but most of the time it's about 50-100. I want to know why it still works if my port forwarding is not working, and if it's possible to get even faster speeds if I get port forwarding working. Upload speeds always seem fast, 200.

Any ideas if Verizon FIOS is blocking incoming ports? I am tired of researching and getting port forwarding to work.

Thanks.

edit

Okay, my torrents had become really slow, less than 40. So as a test I changed wireless channels on the linksys to have it reboot since that is the only way I can see of having it reboot. Speeds went back up again. Getting 230 kB/s on openoffice and climbing.

So does this mean the router has the same problem from the FAQ? After being up a while it starts dying? I am not sure if applying firmware update will disable my vonage on the router.

I want to know why it still works if my port forwarding is not working,

Because port-forwarding only affects incoming connections. You are able to connect by making outgoing connections.

Roughly about a third of the peers out there are like you -- not connectible for some reason. And since you're like them right now (until you figure this out), they cannot reach you, either.

However, you still can reach the other two-thirds of the peers that are connectible.

and if it's possible to get even faster speeds if I get port forwarding working.

In a small swarm, where every peer helps, then it is possible to reach more peers and get faster speeds by becoming connectible. Then those unconnectible peers can reach you.

In large swarms, it makes very little difference.

Any ideas if Verizon FIOS is blocking incoming ports?

They definitely are not.

thxs funchords. your explanation now makes perfect sense. i'm connecting to all those people with green lights :)

i think this linksys router is just crap. i'm going to try a belkin.

for some reason my psps also can't to the router using G, even though i know with the latest updates, the psps can work on the G router.

So my speed for openoffice is within range for my connection? Given that port forwarding is not working currently.
