kookykrazee Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 Okay, I closed uTorrent, had to move the torrent files and some other files to another drive and opened uTorrent, again, the files said they were not there, so I removed the download from the list (not delete data and torrent) and now the torrent files are gone.I looked to see if there is a backup as I seem to recall someone saying before that there is a backup made, but I see none. I have about 250 files that are mostly seeded, at different times and do not have a 'list' to even go look for them.I have not changed any settings as the drives are the same letters as they were before. Please help me restore the torrent files I seem to have lost. Thanks,K
kookykrazee Posted July 17, 2007 Author Report Posted July 17, 2007 I did a complete search of my 4 hard drives for any torrent files, to no avail. They are not even in recycle bin. This is very frustrating.Edit: I don't even have a uTorrent AppData folder, probably partly because I tend to rar up the uTorrent folder whenever I have to do a reinstall.Any other way to figure out where the files went?
DreadWingKnight Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 Did you start - run - %appdata%\utorrent yet?The %appdata% folder is hidden by default, and files in it won't come up in normal searches.
kookykrazee Posted July 17, 2007 Author Report Posted July 17, 2007 Yeah I tried that to no avail.I get the following:Windows cannot find 'c:\Users\*name*\AppData\Roaming\utorrent'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. This is what I got last night, too, when I did a search and even I went manually to the folder.
Saribro Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 You have run µTorrent at least once? You are not on a domain that reloads a fixed profile on every login, discarding al changes from the previous session?
kookykrazee Posted July 17, 2007 Author Report Posted July 17, 2007 I have run µTorrent daily for many years. What I do when I do a reinstall or Windows after testing is backup all files I need. What this entails is rar up my Trillian folder, µTorrent folder and the like (programs that don't have to run the installers to use them). Once I reimage the system, I put the folders back in the Program Files folder and off I go.No domain issues and the like, just a normal computer setup with as little work as possible.
Firon Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 It sounds to me like you didn't back up the AppData folder, which is where the .torrents and dat files are normally stored.
kookykrazee Posted July 17, 2007 Author Report Posted July 17, 2007 I have not seen the files backed up there for a long time. Does this have something to do with the fact that I zip up my folder and don't install or redo my settings at all?
Firon Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 Well, check the ut preferences. See the 'Other' section; did you change 'Store the torrent files in' to a different location?
kookykrazee Posted July 17, 2007 Author Report Posted July 17, 2007 They do go to a 'temp' folder that they are in while the files are transferring, then the file is moved to a different folder so I know what is seeding/completed and what is not. Does this keep the backup from being done/made?
Firon Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 Did you or did you not change the options in the section 'Storage For Torrent Files'? If you set both, then you need to actually backup both locations.
kookykrazee Posted July 17, 2007 Author Report Posted July 17, 2007 I do have them go to a different location and they get moved to a 2nd location when they are done.Is this what you are asking? If so than I am SOL, as they say, eh? lolI am trying to start compiling my torrent files back manually, but it will be a process.
Firon Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 Preferences -> Other. If you set the two top options, then yes, that's exactly what I'm talking about. If you didn't back up those folders, then you're SOL.
kookykrazee Posted July 17, 2007 Author Report Posted July 17, 2007 Alrighty, that's what I thought, so off to a gazillion sites and find the files again. Thanks all for your great and quick help. You did the best you could, for a lost cause..lol.At least the 'files' aren't gone.
dezzo Posted August 17, 2007 Report Posted August 17, 2007 I didnt read all the posts in here so this might already have been mentioned.. but isnt there a way to get uTorrent to store all its data in the main program folder in Program Files, instead of using the AppData one??That way you can just backup one folder.
clever Posted August 17, 2007 Report Posted August 17, 2007 helloits always good , too keep a back up torrent , ive reinstalled windows and started where i left off, always select "choose which directory" hd/partition too place a torrentthen if something like what you said gos wrong , you can select delete , "torrent only"and restart the torrent again, but put the files right back where they were put the first timethen just recheck your torrent manually before you download, remember too do this , make sure you set "dont start torrent automatically"then after recheck , itll have the complete torrent download percent you had before, ive done this many times before, lol, works 100% ive use the progs ive downloaded , and given too others too try , remember , if all else fails, , keep a backup torrent
cmiuc Posted December 19, 2007 Report Posted December 19, 2007 can anyone reply? My computer froze up and Uttorent became unresponsive, and system hang...So i rebooted, and when i loaded up Utorrent, there was nothing in the folders... I looked at the %appdata% folder and see the uttorrents data files, with the .dat files, i copied those over and still nothing showed up in Utorrent... Anyway to recover so i can resume al the already downloads and seeding, without having to start over again?thanks!I'm new here, so pardon any errors on my part.System: Vista x86Utorrent 1.75Cmiuc
ajones81 Posted December 19, 2007 Report Posted December 19, 2007 There are no .torrent files in your %AppData%\uTorrent folder? Also, see above (http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=263277#p263277) - did you set a different torrent storage directory? If so, that's where the .torrent files should be.
cmiuc Posted December 19, 2007 Report Posted December 19, 2007 thanks for the reply ajones81yes the .torrents are in the %appdata%... i didn't set the 'put the torrents in folder' yet as I fear it will over write the torrents that are completed(uploaded-seeded) and the ones that are almost completed(downloading). What is the purpose of %appdata% anyway? it seems like before utorrent put all the files and torrents into its own directory... so if i set the folder to my original folder, should i be back to normal do you think?thanks!
jewelisheaven Posted December 19, 2007 Report Posted December 19, 2007 If you are not seeing any torrent files, press F7 and ensure you are selecting All categories (at least). If you had problems after the crash, you should have seen a "bad resume file" message under Logger tab. In that case, you can try Ultima's sexy bencoded-file editor out on your resume.dat.bad (note when you rename/save the edited/viewed resume be sure uT is closed) to see if you can load in your previous settings.%APPDATA% is a system variable. It allows you to type in %APPDATA%\uTorrent on any computer to pop up the application data folder under any user under any OS which supports those environment variables....Regarding pathing, open up your resume.dat in the editor below to see the path uT thinks the torrents will be found in. Ultima included find/replace so it would seem to be pretty simple if you wanted to implement a change like that.
