I don't get it...

I'm new to torrents, coming from regular p2p. I thought that I was supposed to be able to download large files at high rates of speed but that doesn't seem to be happening. No matter what instructions I follow I cannot seem to forward ports as far as uTorrent is concerned (I've forwarded elsewhere before with no issues so this seems to be specific to uTorr.). My download speeds are averaging between 0-9kB/s with upload speeds 3-5 times that amount, bursts go as high as 30kB/s dl and 75kB/s ul. No matter what settings I use, no matter how many peers/seeds/whatever are connected nothing seems to be working. I would love to use uTorrent as I've already fallen in love with its interface and features, but if its going to take 2+ weeks to download a 1GB torrent.....I'm not into that.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to why I can't forward ports in uTorr? Am I missing something obvious elsewhere? Why is it that my upload speed is so much greater than download speeds?

EDIT: I guess I need to mention that I'm on Cox cable internet going through a wireless router. Speeds on Limewire were upwards of 200kB/s so I don't think ISP throttles....at least not that I can ever see.

There's nothing to figure out. Your ISP is throttling BT. See #133 in here. Perhaps your Limewire isn't adversely effected because they're not going after it for now. It's like eMule in my country. It didn't used to be as badly hit as BT was. But as of a couple of weeks ago, eMule is officially dead for me.

I'm seeing slighty better speeds now (weekend??) but my upload speed shouldn't be that much faster than my download speed should it? Is there a way that I can throttle back upload speeds while I'm downloading? Every time I tried to lower upload speeds it knocked my download speed by that same 3-5 times ratio. Is that just the nature of uTorrent that the majority of my traffic gets sucked up by uploading?

With the Limewire I usually kept uploading to a minimum for the small amount of time I actually spent downloading then cranked it back up while I was away at work/college/etc. I would download for like 4 hours then allowed open uploading for the other 20 or so hours. I'd like to do something similar here if possible.

Yes. However I either tried the things in it, or they do not apply to my situation. Regardless, I seem to have found a workaround of sorts. uTorrent by itself chokes, but if I run it alongside Limewire/Frostwire or Lphant my download/upload speeds each skyrocket to ~100kB/s. Problem seems to be temporarily solved.....

edit: UPDATE -- Well I discovered the root of my problem (and boy do I feel like an idiot).... My ISP (Cox Cable, southern Louisiana) "currently does not support static IPs". Cripes, it would be something that simple. Hopefully this information may save someone some potential grief.
