SiberLynx Posted July 23, 2007 Report Posted July 23, 2007 Hi Guys,I was notified by uTorrent 1.6 about new version availability and accepted it.Everything went smooth. At the same time my firewall (Comodo) reporting now that uTorrent wants to communicate through port 5351 UDP every time I fire up uTorrent. This is new and it wasn't a case in 1.6. I am denying and everything seems to be fine.My forwarded communication port hasn't changed and speed is Ok... and so on...Can you please enlighten me about this port.and another small Q.I see that there is 1.7.2 stable but when I "Check for Updates..." the prog says "no updates"Thanks in advanceRegards
Ultima Posted July 23, 2007 Report Posted July 23, 2007 1.7.2 wasn't put on autoupdate immediately. Can you try removing and recreating the firewall rules for µTorrent?
Thehound Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 It's very likely Local Peer Discovery, which you can do fine without in pretty much all cases. It uses udp to probe for peers on your network and sometimes your local isp, depending on their configuration(some configure their networks as one big LAN for a given area), Disable it and see if this udp stops. It should.
Thehound Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 I think he is concerned about the safety of this communication, not whether it could be allowed through his firewall. I have already verified the udp connections, I'm just trying to show him that's likely all it is, unless he is accidentally running DHT on that port
SiberLynx Posted July 24, 2007 Author Report Posted July 24, 2007 GreetingsGuys, thanks for replies.@ Firon. That was one interesting answer . I neither ever allow nor deny anything "Just"... I am not ashamed not to know something (nobody knows everything) but I prefer to understand especially if something new was introduced. Thanks@ ThehoundI do really appreciate your input. You said: "...very likely Local Peer Discovery..." Do you know where I can get more detailed information. Probably I missed something in change log. uTorrent is quite respectful Software so I was surprised that developers would silently start using specific port for whatever purpose. I'll continue search for truth Thanks again, man.@ UltimaThanks I did try it and it kinda didn't work. Strange. As I mentioned 1.7.1 came fine automatically. But now there is no response at all when I "Check for Update..." (???) Edit: "unable to connect..." message came 10 min later. Probably some troubles over thereBest regards everybody
Firon Posted July 25, 2007 Report Posted July 25, 2007 Actually, hm, that's not the port for local peer discovery. It's 6771.You might be seeing port 5351 because some remote peer on DHT is using it as their listening port.
