New Vista Laptop and can't download anything

Recommended Posts

Hi, I just bought a new Dell 1521 with Vista and I can't seem to download anything. I don't have a router just a Motorola SB5101 modem which is directly connected to my laptop. I can use uTorrent on my desktop which is running XP and using the exact same modem. I've tried everything: exceptions, adding new ones, uninstalling and re-installing the software, turning off the vista firewall. I don't since I don't have a router I can't forward any ports which I have been hearing about. HELP!!!

This is what it says when I run a port check:

Welcome to the µTorrent Port Checker.

A test will be performed on your computer to check if the specified port is opened.

Checking port 47539 on 99.247.114.239...

Error! Port 47539 does not appear to be open.

Please see www.portforward.com for more information about how to map a port.

Please make absolutely sure that PeerGuardian2 or Protowall is allowing utorrent.com (72.20.34.145) in either of those programs. Those of you using ipfilter.dat should make sure the list does not include the website's IP. After making sure of this, re-run this test by refreshing the page (F5).

My connection speed is set at xx/100Mbit

The link you sent me shows me this:

Get your Slackware 12.0 ISOs through BitTorrent here.

Please keep your finished torrent session running as long as possible! We need your help! BitTorrent depends on sharing bandwidth and does not work if there are no seeds (downloaders keeping their client open when download is complete).

You can help by re-starting a finished torrent download in order to share your bandwidth and allow others to download faster! For example: When you're going to bed or away for the weekend, start downloading an already finished torrent. The torrent will perform a quick consistency check and then offer your upload bandwidth to the download pool.

Thanks!

CDROM ISO images may be torrented from these links:

Slackware 12.0 Install ISO disc 1 (A/AP/D/E/F/K/L/N/TCL/Y, /isolinux, /kernels)

Slackware 12.0 Install ISO disc 2 (KDE/T/X/XAP, /extra, /usb-and-pxe-installers)

Slackware 12.0 Install ISO disc 3 (KDEI, /extra)

Slackware 12.0 ISO disc 4 (source)

Slackware 12.0 ISO disc 5 (Slackware Book, /pasture, source, /testing)

Slackware 12.0 ISO disc 6 (source)

Or a complete DVD ISO image may be found here:

Slackware 12.0 DVD ISO (everything)

I clicked on the last link and it opened up in uTorrent but it didn't download anything. Just like the rest of my downloads the arrow on the left went from blue to red.

For one thing, you didn't follow the Speed Guide carefully. Redo step 1 -- test your connection speed. Be sure that you aren't using your connection for any other reason besides testing, while testing. That means no downloading, no IMing, no µTorrent running, no browser activity (other than the testing), etc. Additionally, no other computer on your network (if any) should be using the connection. When you're done with that, select the proper upload rate.

And pick any one of those Slackware torrents... The first one I guess.

If you're sure the Vista firewall is configured properly, then the SurfBoard is being stupid as usual, and putting you behind a NAT. In such a case, you're gonna have to buy a different modem.

Okay so I tested my speed and I upload at 487Kbps so I chose the 2Mbit speed. I tried to download from the link you gave me again and it does the same thing. The modem works with my desktop and everything's fine when I download from there. Maybe it is a firewall issue, I just don't know what else to try. Any suggestions?

Wrong again. I said to select your tested upload rate. How do you pick 2mbit when your upload rate was clearly 487kbit? Select xx/512k since it is the closest.

Your desktop has the port forwarded properly? Are they connected simultaneously? How does the laptop get the internet connection?

Okay I changed the rate. I was trying to match my speed with the max upload speed.

How do I know if my desktop has the port forwarded properly and if they (what is they) are connected simultaneously? I use the internet via an ethernet link which is connected to my SB5101 modem and then into my cable internet line in the wall. When I need to use the desktop to connect to the internet I simply move the ethernet link over to my tower and rest my modem for 10 seconds.

I tried checking the port on my desktop and it works fine.

  • 2 weeks later...

YES!!! Thank you soo much. It works fine once I uninstalled Symantec. Now I don't know how to configure symantec so it doesn't interfer with the downloads. I have symantec on my desktop which runs XP and I don't have any troubles. But I guess that isn't to be figured out here. But if you do have suggestions it would be great.
