snapyourfingers
Hi!I'm sorry to bother you people with another "please help me, my download speed sucks!" topic, but I've been trying thousands of things for the last couple of hours, and I'm getting a bit desperate here. So far I've managed to port forward Utorrent (which took me a couple of days) so the network status light is green. It didn't bring my downloads higher than 30kB/s. Then, I tried this (http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=3912) guide, but got stuck at the BIOS part... after giving that up I tried another guide that got a lot of good comments from alot of people, but it didn't help me in any way. (link: http://www.johntp.com/2006/04/19/how-to-increase-download-speeds-of-utorrent) And THEN I tried the setup guide on this forum, which didn't bring me any succes (in fact, my download speed now hangs around 0,0 and 0,1 kB/s) so I hope you will understand why I'm making this post.As for the information I've collected so far:- the portchecker from the speed guide says the port is OPEN (the only thing I DID succeed in doing)- the speed guide says the following: upload limit: 22kB/s, upload slots: 3, connections (per torrent): 70, connections (global): 130, Max active torrents: 2, Max active downloads: 1. (I've chosen connection type xx/256k)- net.max_halfopen is set to 8- my operating system is Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit - as security I use AVG Anti-Virus and WinPatrol (and there's the standard windows security but I usually turn that off)- my router model is Siemens Gigaset SX551 WLAN dsl and I have a TOSHIBA Software Modem.- The provider we are using is KPN internet- Connection type is DSL- Speedtest results are: download speed: 1194 kb/s, upload speed: 211 kb/s.I'll give the hardware specifications of my laptop if they're needed. Switeck
SearchIndexer.exe 2012 Microsoft Windows Search Indexer Microsoft Corporation SearchProtocolHost.exe 3532 Microsoft Windows Search Protocol Host Microsoft Corporation SearchFilterHost.exe 4008 Microsoft Windows Search Filter Host Microsoft Corporation...Probably are causing you problems, especially the first one...the indexer. Can you disable that service?(GOOGLE for how, if you need to)And read up about what the other 2 do.(GOOGLE that too. )
snapyourfingers
Appearantly it's some kind of Windows filing program for media files and stuff, but I've got it disabled and I'm not missing anything so It's probably not that important . Sadly, it has no visible effect on utorrent since downloadspeed still doesn't get higher than 15 kB/s . (it does have effect on the CPU usage though)Any other suggestions?EDIT: I forgot to mention that those 3 programs worked together, and I've disabled them all. Switeck
AVG may have a mini-firewall built into it that's blocking most/all traffic meant for µTorrent....or some other firewall program may be.
snapyourfingers
I've searched AVG for a firewall... doesn't seem to have one. And winpatrol is definatly not blocking utorrent so I don't think that's where the problem lies... I don't know if it helps but I keep noticing that my downloads never use all of the seeds that are available. For example, right now I'm downloading something that has over 1247 seeds, and utorrent is only using 7 of them. Is that unusual or a common thing? Switeck
Trackers remember seeds that haven't connected with it possibly within the last day. So the reported seeds number can often be WAY wrong from reality. On top of that, the seeds can be firewalled and not making any more connections because it's already full. You shouldn't NEED to connect to lots of seeds to get at least 20+ KiloBYTES/sec download speeds. snapyourfingers
In that case, I'm completely lost :S. Are there any other things that could be blocking Utorrent? ANYTHING at all, cause this is starting to get really frustrating...
Switeck
If you have a router, you could try briefly uninstalling AVG and winpatrol one at a time to see if you get unfirewalled.
