D. Payne
For least trouble, maintenance [low reset needs, port forwarding/forcing and so forth], highest reliability and connectivity, etc.Needs capacity for only two PCs, only one of which used for torrenting. OS is Windows XP.New Linksys WRT54G in hand, but not unboxed yet as I understand that model has been 'dumbed down" since version 4. My current one's a version 2 or 3 and just about to give out. Lately my seeds [of downloads] have been getting disconnected from leechers after only a few seconds and process of elimination has landed on the router. Single port is closed according to test, but router's ancient and crapping out during simple web surfing so I may as well replace it. Everything had worked fine for a couple of years until now.So, any rec of a different Linksys model or altogether different brand/model gratefully received and considered. In praise of uTorrent - despite still having the problem described above I absolutely love it :] Had been using Mainline when my favorite tracker banned it, tried Bit Tornado - a joke by comparison - then took the uTorrent plunge. Clearly poles better than Mainline.
ciper
I suggest finding another of the same unit. The latest version of the HyperWRT Thibor firmware is rock solid and fast. http://www.thibor.co.uk/
Ultima
Tomato firmware gets my recommendation. The creator must really like food, as he made the Tofu version of HyperWRT too before xDWRT54GL is a continuation of the WRT54G v4, by the way. D. Payne
My truest thanks to both ciper and Ultima above for the best and most concise answers I've received. Other queries resulted in needles in needlestacks and they contradicted each other.
Ultima
I'm currently using a WRT54GL with Tomato, and it's working like hot knife on butter -- smooth
Invy
I use WRT54GS with firmware , Hyperwrt 2.1b1 + Thibor15c I've never had a crash problem even with 24/7 heavy connection load since upgrading to that firmware
D. Payne
This all sounds like gold. Thanks everyone! Anyone know where to order a WRT54GL online? None of the stores around here carry it - only the 54G, versions 7 and 8 [pretty sorry those are].

pvchirodoc
So if a guy has a WRT54Gs V.5, is he out of luck as far as upgrading firmware?
Ultima
Might be able to try DD-WRT slim or something, but I didn't have a good experience with DD-WRT.
pvchirodoc
Thanks much. I think I will just head out and grab a different router. Anyone have any good excuses I could use that my wife will accept? ;-)
Switeck
The computer hardware+software market is out to screw the customer over.If you don't buy something with many people testing to prove it actually WORKS, you can end up buying something that's junk right out of the box. ironchef86
This might be a little off topic but I just installed the tomato firmware on my wrt54gl. Are there any special settings I should do for utorrent to work better like the FAQ says for the DD-WRT firmware? Thanks.
Ultima
Other than forwarding your port, not really. If you want, I guess you could increase the maximum number of simultaneous connections in Advanced > Conntrack/Netfilter, but that's probably gonna be fruitless, since you generally shouldn't need that many connections.
