trouble with utorrent and vista...i think

i just got a new laptop with vista home addition. i downloaded utorrent 1.7 and 1.6 but when i open the program it will work for a little bit then freeze and i will have to end it. on the off chance that it does work long enouhg to find a file and set it to download the file is blue and under the general tab the availabillity bar is red and zero, also the speed is as little as .3 kb/s and will sometimes go up to 4-5 kb/s for a second then drop back down. iv have attempted the port fowarding however as well please help
