new utorrent 1.7.4 crashes on opening??

just updated to the latest version of utorrent, and now whenever I run the program it crashes.

The normal program window opens, and then almost immediately it flashes up a message saying "uTorrent has crashed, and uTorrent will now restart.", and it gives me the option of sending a crash dump to the developers, which I have done several times.

I can't think of any reason that it would be doing this other than utorrent itself - if it helps, I'm running windows xp home edition with a pretty old AMD processor.

utorrent has always worked fine for me until now, so I hope someone can help.

Well, if you don't send your dumps, an hijackthis report and a process report AND if you're positive you're on 1.7.4 (and not 1.7.3 !!!), one could only imagine..

Unfortunately that dump doesn't say much. Can you zip up "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\uTorrent" and post it? Those settings files and state might give insight as to why it's crashing.

Hm, those settings work fine for me. You could also try started uTorrent from the command line with an extra flag to generate a larger crash dump:

"C:\Program Files\utorrent\uTorrent.exe" /BIGDUMP

What was the last version of uTorrent that worked for you?

It came up with a different error message, saying "uTorrent has crashed. Unable to generate crash dump."

1.7.3 was working fine, it's just this very last update.

Just go to Start > Run, then paste in this text:

"C:\Program Files\utorrent\uTorrent.exe" /BIGDUMP

When it crashes, you should get a much larger dump file.

The only change between 1.7.3 and 1.7.4 was a DHT fix, which is a rarely executed code path, in other words it shouldn't happen right at startup. If you download 1.7.3 again, does it work? http://download.utorrent.com/1.7.3/utorrent.exe

It was definitely working fine before, I really don't understand.

I've also noticed that now when it crashes and you select "Don't relaunch the application or send a crash dump", the program window stays there frozen, with the normal 'Not Responding' windows message, and you have to 'end now' to quit it.

I doubt that helps much, but I don't think it was doing that when the crashes first started.

Just for testing, can you try moving the .dat and .dat.old files outside of %appdata%\uTorrent and checking if µTorrent continues to crash?
