wikedguy
just updated to the latest version of utorrent, and now whenever I run the program it crashes. The normal program window opens, and then almost immediately it flashes up a message saying "uTorrent has crashed, and uTorrent will now restart.", and it gives me the option of sending a crash dump to the developers, which I have done several times.I can't think of any reason that it would be doing this other than utorrent itself - if it helps, I'm running windows xp home edition with a pretty old AMD processor.utorrent has always worked fine for me until now, so I hope someone can help. Thanks
PhilBench
Well, if you don't send your dumps, an hijackthis report and a process report AND if you're positive you're on 1.7.4 (and not 1.7.3 !!!), one could only imagine..- Bin Laden involved- NSA involved- Bill Gates involved- my brother in law (hate his guts) involved.... Greg Hazel
Unfortunately that dump doesn't say much. Can you zip up "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\uTorrent" and post it? Those settings files and state might give insight as to why it's crashing. Greg Hazel
Hm, those settings work fine for me. You could also try started uTorrent from the command line with an extra flag to generate a larger crash dump:"C:\Program Files\utorrent\uTorrent.exe" /BIGDUMPWhat was the last version of uTorrent that worked for you?
wikedguy
It came up with a different error message, saying "uTorrent has crashed. Unable to generate crash dump."not very helpful1.7.3 was working fine, it's just this very last update.
Greg Hazel
Just go to Start > Run, then paste in this text:"C:\Program Files\utorrent\uTorrent.exe" /BIGDUMPWhen it crashes, you should get a much larger dump file. The only change between 1.7.3 and 1.7.4 was a DHT fix, which is a rarely executed code path, in other words it shouldn't happen right at startup. If you download 1.7.3 again, does it work? http://download.utorrent.com/1.7.3/utorrent.exe
wikedguy
I figured out how to do it right after I first made the post - see the edit aboveNo, 1.7.3 now has the same problem! It was definitely working fine before, I really don't understand.I've also noticed that now when it crashes and you select "Don't relaunch the application or send a crash dump", the program window stays there frozen, with the normal 'Not Responding' windows message, and you have to 'end now' to quit it.I doubt that helps much, but I don't think it was doing that when the crashes first started. wikedguy
yes, they both workhow soon after 1.7.3 was 1.7.4 released? - I usually stay up to date, but this suggests I might have gone straight from 1.7.2 to 1.7.4, which is possible
Greg Hazel
They were released very close together, you're right. So this narrows it down quite a bit, thank you.
Ultima
Just for testing, can you try moving the .dat and .dat.old files outside of %appdata%\uTorrent and checking if µTorrent continues to crash?
wikedguy
no, it still didn't work - but i noticed some files in there which weren't there beforeThey are BAD filessettings.dat.1.badsettings.dat.2.badsettings.dat.3.badThey weren't there before when I uploaded the settings files - if you think they might help, let me know.
