defiler
Hi to all, this is my first time posting, I live with a bug, when I minimize uTorrent theicon is not displayed! However the program is running normally in the background. I'm using Win XP SP2, I don't know what causes this (I'm using the latest version 1.7.5 but the bug exists since at least 1.7.1) but I've noticed that this happens if I run many programs simultaneously. What should I do?Many thanks in advance! Firon
You sure it isn't just being hidden by the auto-hide feature XP has?
megahurts_gr
I confirm this is a problem with 1.7.5. It is a real bug, and not the user's failure to use the right settings or to find the hidden tray icon.It is different from, yet possibly related to, "Utorrent version 1.7.4 minimilize bug" (http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=29065)
Firon
I can't get my tray icon to not show up.Can you post your settings.dat? It's found in %AppData%\uTorrent by default. And post a process list from HijackThis as well.
megahurts_gr
Please excuse my ignorance, but... how do I post something? Especially if it is a binary file like settings.dat?

megahurts_gr
But of course. Here it is: http://www.zshare.net/download/3748040fcc85e4/Today I bootted up my computer and the tray icon did not show at all. I could tell that utorrent was running as it should because of the blinking lights on the router. I re-launched the application and the window popped up instantaneously. From the speed graph it was obvious that it had been running for a while. From this point on the behavior is quite persistent: the tray icon will never appear for the rest of the day, and I will always have to re-launch the application in order to see the window. If you suspect any of the programs that I am running, tell me which, and I will try temporarily disabling them. Ultima
Hm, I just tested your settings.dat, and it worked properly; I still couldn't get the tray icon to disappear. There doesn't seem to be anything in your HiJackThis log that is known to be problematic with µTorrent either :/
Mystic Buddha
I too have this problem now. I think it started happening after I appended /minimized to the command line. Such irony!
zoom32
I have this prob also. I was going to report as a bug also ver 1.7.5 sometimes both minimize to tray and close to tray work fine other times neither work but task is running and if I go and in task manager bring to front all is well minimize or close and it's gone again. Sometimes I can go to settings uncheck > minimize and close to taskbar apply then open it back up and reset and it will minimize > close to tray again I do believe this is a bug as it's been happening on my Utorrent install since day one Ive just always brought it back through task manager. I was just wondering if this was known and if there were plans to fix .Thank all zoom32
jewelisheaven
There is no KNOWN bug about this, unless you're talking about http://utorrent.com/faq.php#Incompatible_software and Stardock...If you'd like to help troubleshoot it verifying whether or not it's a bug within uT, providing a HiJackThis log for your computer, and a Process Explorer list of DLLs for uTorrent wouldn't hurt. anakin66
I am having this problem as well. When I startup my system, the icon does not appear, despite the option being selected, even though the program is running in the background. It used to only happen some of the time. I was having another bug that I reported a few days ago, and Firon kindly helped fix. My system was trying to open utorrent 1.7.5 twice. It turned out that there were two entries to startup utorrent.exe in the Windows XP SP2 registry's software>run section. This caused an error at system bootup telling me utorrent appeared to already be running. I deleted the second run entry, and now that error has disappeared because the program is only starting once.Ironically, my utorrent icon now does not appear in the system tray, even though it is, in fact, running in the background. This is less annoying than the error message was. It just makes me a little nervous to be trying to seed something, only to not see the utorrent icon to know that it is running, and have to double click the desktop utorrent button to make sure that it is. Fix one thing, break another. Oh the humanity! Here's a copy of my hijack log. And I do not use the hide unused system tray icon option; everything else shows up:Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.0 (BETA)Scan saved at 12:53:44 PM, on 15/01/2008Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MsMpEng.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\aawservice.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgcc.exeC:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\jusched.exeC:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exeC:\Program Files\PC Auto Shutdown\AutoShutdown.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\RUNDLL32.EXEC:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\devldr32.exeC:\Program Files\IE New Window Maximizer\iemaximizer.exeC:\Program Files\ATI Multimedia\main\ATISched.EXEC:\Program Files\ATI Multimedia\main\ATIDtct.EXEC:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgamsvr.exeC:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgupsvc.exeC:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgemc.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exeC:\Program Files\PC Auto Shutdown\ShutdownService.exeC:\Program Files\uTorrent\utorrent.exeC:\Program Files\Alcohol Soft\Alcohol 120\StarWind\StarWindService.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\DAEMON Tools Lite\daemon.exeC:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exeC:\Downloads\HijackThis v2\HiJackThis_v2.exeR0 - Firon
Can you verify this happens with the latest 1.8 alpha? See the announcements forum for download links.
anakin66
I tried the 1.8 alpha. My system tray icon now appears at startup. Whether this is because the problem doesn't exist, or because utorrent was freshly installed, I can't say.
barrycj
I too have this problem intermittently. uTorrent 1.7.7. has been running all day - this morning the tray icon was there, now it has gone - however it's working fine in the background.I can not replicate the problem at will however so not much help in finding the cause.I am pretty sure it started with ver. 1.7.5 but not absolutely sure. It has been happening for a month or so at least - just thought it was a problem with my system until I decided to investigate further by searching the forum. A power down and re-boot usually brings it back - but not always - just needed a soft re-start as well to get it back.XP Pro SP2
jewelisheaven
It doesn't disappear without reason. Are the ___ to tray settings set? Are you running http://utorrent.com/faq.php#Incompatible_software ?Usually the icon disappears due to the program crashing. If the program is still running start->run->"path\to\utorrent.exe" /BRINGTOFRONT
anakin66
I've switched to utorrent v 1.7.7 I'm still having the exact problem as those above mentioned. Sometimes when my system starts in the morning, the tray icon is there. Other times it is not. Regardless, when I open it, it has always already been running in the background.Regarding jewelisheaven's instruction to go to the start>run menu and type in "path\to\utorrent.exe" /BRINGTOFRONT , I did so and simply got an error message saying "Windows cannot find 'path\to\utorrent.exe' ." You did mean to go to the start menu, select run, and type it in exactly as I have written it above, including quotation marks around "path\to\utorrent.exe" , did you not? jewelisheaven
When including spaces or other special characters (µ for ex) pathing to the exe must be in "". I did not mean type path\to\utorrent.exe.... you must replace your PATH\TO\utorrent.exe ---> "C:\program files\utorrent\utorrent.exe" for the default install, i.e.If uT is running and responsive then /BRINGTOFRONT parameter will bring uT out from hiding. I'd make sure nothing else is hooking into uT's process... that's where the Process Explorer DLL list I mentioned comes in handy.
anakin66
Well, that was embarassing...
jewelisheaven
The question is, is uT still running and responsive to that command?? I have no clue what makes uT disappear at all, but getting to a place where you can reproduce it reliably may help someone else give you information which is needed...You already provided a HJT log, could you get Process Exploere and paste a DLL list for the utorrent.exe process? (open procexp.exe, Ctrl-L, Ctrl-D, click utorrent.exe, Ctrl-A)

barrycj
Using RUN->C:\Program Files\uTorrent\uTorrent.exe the program comes out of hiding and closes OK but without the tray icon appearing at all. (This is the first time it's happened since last post)If I add the ' /BRINGTOFRONT' parameter Windows just throws up an error saying it cannot find C:\ProgramAm I missing something?Actual text typed into RUN box is :-C:\Program Files\uTorrent\uTorrent.exe /BRINGTOFRONTResult:-Windows cannot find C:\Program. Make sure you typed the name correctly......etc.
