HarryP Posted September 18, 2007 Report Posted September 18, 2007 My home network shares an 8 megabit cable connection. My computer is wireless, my wife's is wired. When I am up/down loading my wife's connection drops to slightly better then dial-up (as tested at speedtest.net). As soon as I close or stop the downloads her connection improves to around 8MB. Since my computer is for fun, and hers is business, this is unacceptable. Is there a workaround or will I only be able to use the progam at night? Thanks!

Switeck Posted September 18, 2007 Report Posted September 18, 2007 You must use conservative setting to prevent "hogging" the connection.
HarryP Posted September 18, 2007 Author Report Posted September 18, 2007 Do you have any suggestions as to what limits I should impose both up and down as "conservative"?Thanks.
Switeck Posted September 19, 2007 Report Posted September 19, 2007 Not until you tell us how fast your connection is when you measure down AND up speeds while the line is idle (not being used for anything else.)Many people mistakenly use their download speed max as the setting in Speed Guide (CTRL+G)...but it's asking for UPLOAD speed.Your 8 megabits/sec download connection might be less than 0.8 megabits/sec upload!
Invy Posted September 19, 2007 Report Posted September 19, 2007 What kind of 'business' work requires your full 8 Mb connection being used?Anyway, run a speedtest somewhere for your upload. Setting a limit to 80-90% of the total speed should be good enough.I have 58kB/sec upload max. Setting it to around 45-48KB/sec works well for me.
HarryP Posted September 19, 2007 Author Report Posted September 19, 2007 My upload is 1.5 megabit. I have selected the 1 megabit option in the software. When I am down/uploading her conection drops to about 128kB up and down, which is not enough to keep Outlook operating without complaining.
Switeck Posted September 19, 2007 Report Posted September 19, 2007 Has speed tests confirmed you're getting the full 1.5 megabits/sec upload speed?
Switeck Posted September 19, 2007 Report Posted September 19, 2007 Time to delve into the Troubleshooting Guide then:http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=15992It tells what I mean by "conservative settings".
