New uTorrent install, firewall turned off, port not open/not clever

I have been doing BT for three years. I'm trying uTorrent for the first time and think its lighter profile is better for my aging machine. Anyway..

I use a Toshiba PCX2200 cable modem. No router.

Azureus always worked fine. Clever and everything. Good ratio. Suddenly I'm not clever. I switch to uTorrent and get the same thing:

Error! Port 16995 does not appear to be open.

Plus my tracker's clever/connected test says I'm not connected.

I get this message with Windows firewall on and, for grins, off. I have tried lots of ports. Same deal.

Could my modem have gone flaky? I feel like I've tried everything.
