No one has provided an answer or fix for this yet and I see it asked all over the place. I have been using utorrent for months with no problems until the 1.7.5 update after which i get the above error on ALL torrents. I have gone back through the port forwarding, removing and adding firewall settings on both windows firewall and system network, unistalling utorrent, reinstalling utorrent and all older versions with no luck. I know there is a brilliant person out there that can fix this, please help!

"...because the target machine actively refused it..."

This message is returned by Windows when a TCP connection attempt has been refused by the remote party -- the distant IP address and port. There is no setting in uTorrent that can change that behavior, it is entirely dependent on whether there is an open port on the other end of your connection attempt.

If you see this message in the log, then it is referring to the peer's BitTorrent client.

If you see this message on the General page of uTorrent, then it is referring to the Tracker.

Reasons there is no open port on the distant end:

- A BitTorrent client/Tracker is not running

- A BitTorrent client/Tracker is running on a different port than expected (misconfiguration of the tracker or, more commonly, the other peer)

- A BitTorrent client/Tracker is running on a different IP (misconfiguration of the tracker or, the other peer, or DNS in the case of a Tracker)

- The distant peer's/Tracker's firewall is not configured to forward packets properly

- The distant peer/Tracker is rebooting or has gone offline

- Some device or software between your client and the distant IP and Port is intercepting your connection request and is forging a response (e.g. Great Firewall of China, Sandvine Anti-P2P or other policy-enforcement device)

Try this:

Let's say the URL announce address is http://tracker.trackerexample.com:6969/aHJDFHddsdflhjdhdfhjdsjs/announce.php

Open a Command Line session (click Start, Run, CMD.EXE)

At the command prompt, type telnet tracker.trackerexample.com 6969 and press ENTER.*

*Note 1: Substitute the information for your tracker as shown by this example

*Note 2: Note the space before the port number (example 6969), do not accidentally copy/paste the colon.

*Note 3: If there is no colon and no port number in your tracker announce, use port 80 instead of 6969

IF:

- You get an error message that the connection was refused, then telnet is reporting the same thing that uTorrent is -- this demonstrates that the problem is not with uTorrent.

- Something else happens -- write back with more information about your tracker and your Internet Connection (ISP, College, Satellite, etc.?)

Hi there:

I've made it but got no difference at all.

Got no error message in command prompt, but my tracker status did not get better - today and in this case is still "conncetion closed by peer".

My ISP is Netcabo from Portugal (so forgive my bad english) and the trackers that i'm reffering to are dvdquorum.es and moviex.info [this one gets Offline (timed out) tracker error].

My best Regards!

Does the announce start with http://tracker.dvdquorum.es:2710/ ?? If so, can you click on this link with your web browser?

http://tracker.dvdquorum.es:2710/stats

Do you get an error or stats like

leechers 27798

seeders 11836

peers 39634

torrents 3303

announced 1503837 ... (etc.)

Now about MovieX, does the announce start with http://www.moviex.info:2710/ ?? If so, then this is down for me, too. Check their forum to see if there are any announcements.

Hello again, and thank you very much for your help.

I've followed that link and got a stats list like the one you've posted.

Meanwhile, moviex, yes, that moviex, is working fine with me, at this very moment, of course!

And, about you've posted in this thread http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?pid=276034#p276034, i've tried it all...

I've got the correct settings, and, each time I start uTorrent everything is really fine.

As i've already said, this happens a after a while (half an hour, sensivelly).

Thanks again!

I'm getting the "...because the target machine actively refused it..." error in the tracker section on utorrent but it is with every single torrent i try regardless of the host of the given torrent. This is very frustrating. Here are some of my specs you've asked for: ISP: SBC DSL - 2Wire 1000hw wireless router/modem

I'm not sure how to find out my tracker info. Isn't this supposed to be as simple as downloading Utorrent and forwarding the port?? That's all i had to do the first time around and had no problems for several months until this update. Thanks to all who are trying to help and sorry if I seem too dense to grasp what you all are saying. Please let me know if you have any more ideas.

funchords: I've been following your advice to try and fix the same problem. (I'm 2 thirds throuh a 23Gb download!) Like all the other posters here (it seems), I'm not very knowledgeable about these things and am just muddling through.

The message I got after trying to connect with Telnet was: "Could not open connection to the host on port 34411: Connection Failed."

This suggests it may have something to do with a misconfigured port on the other end, except for the fact that when I try to connect to the address with my browser (http://inferno.demonoid.com) Firefox tells me that it has a 'problem loading page, can't establish connection' which points to the server being down, I'm guessing?

Anyway, I'd just patched TCPIP.sys but I don't think it's that. (That's given me prob's with my ISP -BT- before.) Presumably, there's not much you can do, if the port is misconfigured on the other end? Is there a way to find an alternate provider of the same torrent and continue a part downloaded file that way?

[There's a hell of a lot about all this I still don't understand, even after trying to absorb the manual etc; The only way I'll learn about all this is to do it.]
