Full system powerdown while downloading torrents

Recommended Posts

I've got an issue here and I've searched around the net and havn't found anything that quite matches up to my problem.

When downloading torrents my system completly shuts down. I mean full power down. there is nothing in my event log and no problems with software otherwise. To test the issue i ran my system as I normally would but without uTorrent running and the system was up for 72 hours. I then started uTorrent and the system shutdown within 15 mins. The issue only occurs when I am using utorrent (and the embeded opera client)

I am aware that this is most likely a hardware issue. I am a PC tech and am well verse in hardware. I have run hardware tests on the system and all the hard drives pass manufacturer tests (all 3 are Seagate sata drives. 80, 250 and 320.) Full system passes PCCheck 6.0 test. Power supply is a 450W antech and mobo is an ASUS k8n with an AMD64 3200+ CPU. System has 1.5 GB of RAM. I have had all 3 technicians at my job look at my PC as well as a few PC savy friends and we are all stumped. I'm hoping that by posting here the community can provide me with other options for testing or other possible causes of the issue.

Thanks.

Me too. This has happened 4 times tonight, but only when uTorrent is running. It runs for a little while (between 5 and 30 minutes seems about right). Have downloaded several megs of multiple files. Then my Asus laptop shows a momentary (just a flash, perhaps 0.1seconds) blue screen with dump info on it, and then all goes black as the system starts up again from power-off state. It tries to scan hard drives (as it would whenever it's not shut down correctly). Shortly after startup, windows offers to send details of the minidump to watson.microsoft.com. Can I post a minidump here? (It's big, although I've just noticed it deletes when I click "don't send"! Maybe I'll try again & copy the file.)

I haven't run uTorrent for a few weeks, so it upgraded itself on startup today. So it could be something in the new version.

John.

I agree it could be a faulty power supply, but it seems suspicious that (a) the symptom only ever appears when uTorrent is running, and (B) it's exactly the same symptom as at least one other forum-member's report. Also, since power supplies are under the control of the CPU these days, there's got to be at least some suspicion of software. I'll keep investigating...

John.

Hey John... I can help you with the blue screen issue.

Right click on my computer and select properties.

click the advanced tab

under startup and recovery click "settings"

under system failure, make sure that "automatically restart" is unchecked.

as I checked this on my own system I found that mine was checked. Every system that leaves my store has this unchecked so I'm surprized i left it unchecked myself. must have forgotten from the last reload.

I brought home a new power supply from work today but it's late so I will replace it in the morning and report back in the after noon after some testing. I have come accross a couple of threads where people suggest that using torrents can cause a sudden pull on the power supply because of the repeated reading and writing to an HDD.

For the record, I did put my PSU through a stress test at work and it reacted fine. so I'm doubting that this is the problem.

till tomorrow

To fuzzytear,

I am always wary of BHOs, as they are the primary form of browser-hijacking spyware:

O2 - BHO: Groove GFS Browser Helper - {72853161-30C5-4D22-B7F9-0BBC1D38A37E} - C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\Office12\GRA8E1~1.DLL

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Seems kind of odd to not have a value/destination here:

O4 - Global Startup: Logitech SetPoint.lnk = ?

All I can suggest now is to try backing up and uninstalling various programs on your computer -- as I fear one conflicts with µTorrent. If the problem doesn't go away when any given program is removed, reinstall the program (or newer version).

To JohnTheSecure,

Any time I see "randomly" named files I think virus:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\S24EvMon.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZCfgSvc.exe

C:\WINDOWS\System32\1XConfig.exe

Best find out what those files are for!

ok, I finally figured it out... I think

the problem has to do with the ammount of connections to my system. I was paying some bills and noticed that my problems started happening around the same time that I upgraded my internet speeds. So, I got a couple of apps and found that I was was having an INSANE ammount of connections to my system. probably due to the higher speeds. I went into the utorrent preferences and changed my connection limits to 50 per torrent and 80 globally. this has fixed the problem but reduced my speeds. so with a little trial and error I think I will be able to get my speeds to a maximum with no shutdowns. I have been downloading for 48 hours. will report back with my findings
