png19 Posted September 30, 2007 Report Posted September 30, 2007 whenever Utorrent runs a check on a download that I'd previously stopped and restarted, it sucks up the CPU and bogs down the system, using up to 100% sometimes of the CPU. Once the check is over it settles down again, but then it happens about every ten minutes or so. Suddenly the computer will lag really badly and I can't do anything much until it passes. If I check the task manager I can see Utorrent is causing the problem by using almost all the CPU. Have no idea why this is happening all of a sudden. Any help appreciated.
DreadWingKnight Posted September 30, 2007 Report Posted September 30, 2007 Did you check your hard drive transfer mode in device manager?
png19 Posted October 1, 2007 Author Report Posted October 1, 2007 Yeah but what am I supposed to be looking for? My HD transfer mode is set to "dma if available". But that hasn't changed since I installed the drive, and this problem with utorrent is new.
Firon Posted October 1, 2007 Report Posted October 1, 2007 You want to check the current transfer mode.
png19 Posted October 3, 2007 Author Report Posted October 3, 2007 What? Of course I'm checking the CURRENT setting ... what else would I be checking? I would hardly be checking old settings. Okay, so I check the settings and then what? What am I supposed to be looking for? Or is this a wild goose chase?
DreadWingKnight Posted October 3, 2007 Report Posted October 3, 2007 "DMA if Available" is not a valid value for the current transfer mode. There are 3 fields.1> Device Type2> Transfer mode (a drop down and the value you told us)3> Current transfer mode (a disabled text box)Just because the transfer mode is set to DMA if available, it doesn't mean the current transfer mode is a DMA family one.
