nbjt41784 Posted October 20, 2007 Report Posted October 20, 2007 Ok. I know its possible to get higher speeds...hell..with CABLE! let alone my fat 5mb/s up pipe. Here are my current settingsUtorrent v1.6.1Linksys 54gs V5 running DD-wrt v23 SP2 Micro-Router has MAX half open connections settings at 4096-port forwarded successfully through the router (duh)Computer-3.2GHZ pentium 4 w/HT-2GB PC3200 400mhz duel channel OCZ platinum memory-primary HD - Hitachi 7200 Sata 3.0 Gb/s 500GB -Nvidia geforce 6800ultra over clocked-10/100/1000 network cardWindows settings-no personal firewall-windows firewall off-static ip address-half open TCP connections set to 100Utorrent settings (checked boxes, i.e i have these 'ticked' off)-add utorrent to windows firewall exceptions-enable DHT network-enable DHT network for new torrents-Enable peer exchange-Outgoing protocol encryption enabled, allow incoming legacy connections-net.max_halfopen = *70Utorrent numbers-global max upload rate set to 310 KB/s-global max download rate set to 'no limit'-global max number of connections set to 750-max number of connected peers per torrent set to 100-number of upload slots per torrent set to 8Disk Caching-set to override automatic size and and set to 512MB-set to reduce memory usage when the cache is not needed-set to enable caching of disk writes-set to enable caching of disk readsI have tried to adjust the global max upload, up and down up and down. I sat and watched the bandwidth chart for, heck...an hour or 2?? i can tell you thisany GMU (global max upload) < 200 = 200 or < downloadany GMU >500 = NO more then 350 downloadi also tried adjusting the number of slots per torrent with the following numbers3 - HORRIBLE performance, less then 150 kB/s download8 - average approx 300 kB/s download80 - avg 200 kB/s downloadim at a loss, i don't know what else to change. I would like to settle on a constant 600-800 KB/s download. I know people who have upwards of 1000kB/s downloads with fiber (using private trackers)I did use the openoffice torrent with my settings and hit 2100KB/s now i know you are going to say "it depends on the torrent" yeah, but i have tryed over 100 different torrents and STILL cant break the 350k/Bs barrier...they cant ALL be constraining me I'm at a loss, any help would be greatly appriciatedThanx
hermanm Posted October 20, 2007 Report Posted October 20, 2007 > they cant ALL be constraining me Why not? You got 2100 KB/s with OpenOffice...
Switeck Posted October 21, 2007 Report Posted October 21, 2007 net.max_halfopen may work better set at 40 or lower. Connection churn if you're not firewalled will be high enough as it is to maintain links to 100+ peers and seeds. For (RAM-based) Disk Cache, try disabling "reduce memory usage when the cache is not needed"...µTorrent isn't too good at knowing when that is. Enable "Increase automatic cache size when cache thrashing"...to possibly reduce Disk Overloaded conditions. How fast can you upload steady in µTorrent? If it's also not capable of breaking 350 KiloBYTES/sec...you may have BIGGER problems!(5 megabits/sec upload bandwidth should be capable of at least 500 KiloBYTES/sec upload speed! Theoretical 8 bits per byte would be over 600 KiloBYTES/sec upload speed.)Presumably, you get the green light in µTorrent?
nbjt41784 Posted October 21, 2007 Author Report Posted October 21, 2007 Thanks for your responsesI will try the Disk Cache suggestions. If i ramp up my 'upload' speed, i can get it as high as 580-600 KB/s (bytes, yes i know the difference, system admin here heheh ) and yes i get the green light at the bottom.any other ideas?
kurahashi Posted October 21, 2007 Report Posted October 21, 2007 First, why still 1.6.1?I can't remember right now if there where some critical fixes since then, but it's possible. With your fat upload pipe, you can increase number of connected peers per torrent to, for example, 200But frankly, I'm suspecting something is wrong, and most probably with your router.
nbjt41784 Posted October 22, 2007 Author Report Posted October 22, 2007 Well. what do you think could be wrong with the router?any other ideas? So far these 2 suggestions have been made.net.max_halfopen may work better set at 40 or lower. Connection churn if you're not firewalled will be high enough as it is to maintain links to 100+ peers and seeds.Turn up max connected peers per torrent to 200does everyone agree with these? Does anyone actually have any technical explanation as to why either of these would be better?see i followed this guide herehttp://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=8761and he says that lower upload slots and max peers/torrent is better; and he has fiber like me.
Switeck Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 If your networking software and hardware is "solid" (meaning no junk!) then yeah, run with higher connections per torrent. If you're not firewalled in µTorrent, a high net.max_halfopen may actually be no help at all -- that's why I said 40 or less.
nbjt41784 Posted October 24, 2007 Author Report Posted October 24, 2007 Thank you for all your suggestionsHowever, i have tried all them on several torrents and have not found any significant change, most of the time i cant break through the 250kB/s mark. Does anyone have any idea why? Thanks in advance
Switeck Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 Presumably, you have the allow more upload slots if <90% upload speed checked.(It is by default I think.)So, how many upload slots are actually in use typically on your active torrents? Is there typically FAR more than the 8 max upload slots limit you set?If so, then there's probably a lot of slow and/or overloaded peers on that torrent. Not much you can do to speed the OTHER guy up.
