PlayWithFire
Three of the torrents that i left to download for the night produced an errorIt says cyclic redundancy checkHere's a screenshot in case it makes a differenceNow, i am suspecting that my harddrive might be failing. I would hear the HD working normaly, and then hear a click, and it would go quiet, and my computer would freeze for a few seconds, and then resume workingThis may not be a µTorrent issue, but i still hope you guys can help me out
Firon
CRC failure is an error reported by the hard drive when it has bad sectors. In short, your hard drive is dying.Stop using your PC NOW, get a new hard drive, and get a good data recovery tool to backup the data. PlayWithFire
crud so, it is not savable at all?i do have an external HD that i use for all my backups, just in case something like this would happen.
Firon
You need a good (probably non-windows based, so you can boot off it from a CD or something) recovery tool to backup all the data you can. Once you back it up, use SpinRite and give it a thorough test. I probably wouldn't use the drive again.
PlayWithFire
well, i will not use this PC againi got a Live Ubuntu CD, so i will use that to back things upi will see what spinrite is

1c3d0g
I'm sorry to hear that, Chuck. Going by what happened in this thread I suggest you back up all your important data and after that get a utility to diagnose your drive... :/

PlayWithFire
since i posted this topic, i've been using the same HD, and just backing up almost dailyi ran spin rite (took ages) some files ended up getting corrupted, so i had to redownloadbut since then, i've not had any problems. i also ran check disk quite a few times
Firon
Yeah, after you run a comprehensive SpinRite check, you might be able to keep using the drive. Just make sure you run a scan every month or so to make sure the drive is still good, and prevent loss of any more data.

stephenmassa
I are having this same problem, but what happen is: such an error every time when I test if my port are working fine, I have tried lot of different ports and such the same result "ERROR", every time the file start to download and stops on 80%. more or less, but keep going if I stay pressing STOP and PLAY !!! =(
Firon
CRC error has nothing to do with a working port. It means your hard drive is failing.
stephenmassa
I did a format in my computer and continue with this problem, have any program to fix this?
Ultima
A reformat won't fix a hard drive that is failing physically, which is what CRC errors indicate.
Firon
You have to replace the drive.
Switeck
If it's a little area of physical damage on the platter, a complete FDisk and reformat may prolong what remains of the hard drive's life...but its reliability can be assumed to be NIL, as it will finish dying at a moment's notice. myxomoP
I too had CRC errors popping up all over, did a chkdsk of my cheap terabyte drive overnight and it came up clean. I'm waiting to see if it happens again. How positive are you that cyclic redundancy checks seal the fate of the drive? could it be a fluke or just some corrupted blocks that the windows utility or some other program can fix? moogly
You can repare bad sectors with software like HDD Regenerator e.g.Anyway CRC errors can be an issue with RAM or disk failure.
HarryEvans
I got the same massage does that mean that i lost all 15GB that i'v downloaded
moogly
It depends.
Firon
You can't really REPAIR a CRC. You can just mark the sector as bad and hope that other bad sectors don't develop on the HDD.Of course, it's possible that other glitches could cause it, like a defective SATA controller or possibly even bad RAM. moogly
Of course you can repair bad sector, it depends on what causes it.At least 50% of bad sectors are due to magnetic anomalies and can be fixed but lots of softwares propose only low-level format or zero-zill tools and it's not sufficient. Just use the good software. But mechanical or electronic issue for a sector is clearly impossible to fix it (or pay a specialized corporate to retrieve your data). flyingshrapnel
It is important to have a good warranty coverage for your computer, especially the laptop. Whenever, CRC errors are reported, run CHKDSK and get an log on the result of check. You can view the log by using Window's event viewer (RUN: eventvwr.msc) . It will be in the name of winlogon. Please note, that there will be more than one winlogon source. However, if you are click the right one, it will show the drive name and designation and the rest of check result. Even if your computer did not report a CRC error, do the CHKDSK anyway before the warranty run out. If there is any error reported. call the warranty department of your computer maker and get a replacement HD. I extend my Toshiba Qosmio laptop warranty to three years. and when CRC reported an error during download. I did what I said and get a new HD without any fuss. I also make another HD purchase online to upgrade my laptop HD from 100 GB to 250GB after I got my new replacement HD from Toshiba. I pulled the new 100GB replacement HD out and put it in an HD enclosure and made it a free portable USB HD for backup. a good deal by all reckoning. The bottom line is get good extend warranty and do not hesitate to make a claim. Run CHKDSK regularly, make back up often. Don't wait to act when CRC error reported, or you will regret.
