Using embedded tracker

Hello!

I want to make torrents that will be shared just within a small group of people.

From FAQ:

1. The embedded tracker URL is: http://your_ip_address:port/announce (where your ip is your computer's ip address and port is µTorrent's listening port)

2. The embedded tracker must be enabled in: µTorrent menu > options > preferences > Advanced > bt.enable_tracker: set to "true".

Since I (and other people in the group) dont have a static IP, I was wondering If we will be able to share a torrent without point 1. So when creating a new torrent "private torrent" is NOT checked and the tracker field is empty?

Thanks!

You might have trouble, depending on how often your ISP decides it feels like renewing/reassigning your IP. Try a dynamic DNS service... like DynDNS, and you can put the domain there instead.

But connecting without entering any tracker is also possible. I created a torrent without tracker, send to "first" friend and he downloaded it.

BUT, then I send it to "second" friend he could not connect. He got connected as soon as "first" friend got online. Looks like the "second" connect to me through "first" one?

You could but everybody would have to use the 'add peer' function. And when people's IPs start changing you might have to readd them...

Seriously its best to setup the tracker and use a dyndns service.

Or you are hoping to find each other through DHT and PEX. Which isn't fail-proof.

I set up DynDNS, also installed DynDNS Updater create private torrent with custom address from DynDNS and entered uTorerent port (http://your_ip_address:port/announce) but

the "tracker status" says: offline (timed out). On www.dyndns.com under host services says that my custom hostname has correct (updated) IP.

Why is the tracker not working? UPDATE: now it looks like its working

But still, please:

1. So because DHT isnt fail-proof I cant find all of my friends?

2. If we use a tracker (from well known sites) and dont manually upload

torrent to any of tracker sites, will be possible for anyone else to download

our torrent? OR why use my IP in tracker instead of some public tracker?

1. Yes.

2. That would require a truly open tracker. Which are rare.

Semi-open (aka public) trackers require you to upload your torrent. This is still an option because if you word your torrent right nobody will download it.
