GUI hang - Nothing downloading?

I don't even know if that's what's going on, but I have this weird problem.

Whenever I leave utorrent running for not even that long, maybe an hour at some times, the GUI just stops updating. Most notable is that the countdown in "Update in" stops, but nothing else updates either. The download speeds are reported as frozen but the size doesn't change and so on.

The really weird part is that everything responds fine, I can open all the dialogs, and minimize/restore, but still the GUI doesn't refresh...

The only fix is to restart utorrent.

This wouldn't be so bad if utorrent was actually downloading while this happens, but so far I haven't been able to determine if that is the case... But I think it doesn't, small files have failed to download overnight and in the morning I find that this crazy GUI strike is going on.

I'm running Vista 64bit, no firewalls on the PC. I'm behind a lynksys WRT54GL running the latest Tomato firmware with a 20/20 fiber line and everything works fine, except this GUI thing.

I don't see anything major.

I left utorrent overnight and this didn't happen again. I think the only things I changed were the resolve IP and protocol encryption, both turned off. Hopefully this won't happen again. I'll be back if it does...

What's with DLLhost in that folder? And all the 'files missing' things make me think that your system either is or was infected with malware.

wow, it happened again, this time as I sat down in front of the computer, like two minutes later the GUI was frozen - which it hadn't been, I checked.

I don't think that I'm infected with spyware or even that I have been, everything else is behaving just like it should and I'm not seeing any weird stuff happening other that this.

It would have to be a pretty specific malware, designed to freeze the GUI in utorrent...

Too bad I can't replicate this more consistently.

I've been having this problem as well. I think somehow the underlying worker thread(s) froze and caused the GUI to not update.

If you go to the Logger tab, hold down Control and choose "Dump Memory Info" from the right-click menu it should cause uTorrent to crash and generate a dump file. Please post this so I can figure out where the thread is locked.

It's a snapshot of the memory of each thread at the time of the dump. The minidumps do not include the entire heap, so I cannot look at every little thing about your state, but it will tell me where the lockup is occuring.

OK, I clicked on "Submit this dump to the developers" when it crashed. The file name was 4602-utorrent.e4c6.dmp and it came from the same IP I'm using to post on this forum.

My recycle bin is on, and it does not occur only after I delete a .torrent and/or its data, but I think it happened once when I did delete one.

Edit: It happened one more time, but this time it occured right after I deleted a torrent and its data.

I've been having the same problem for a while, but I think it started after I deleted the first torrent and data. I also have other p2p product, not torrent like, but file share via server, that was installed after utorrent and it's installation date is similar to the problem start date, all doe I'm not certain....

I have a few dump files, and just send the last one. File name is 4602-utorrent.a538.

This problem seems to be related to the Recycle Bin. If anyone can reproduce this with "Move to trash" off, I would love to know. Is anyone using multiple drives, or external drives? A size or location difference between the place the file sits and the Recycle Bin might be related.

We've changed this, so it won't lock up uTorrent. However, it might leave a thread running forever. If anyone is very patient, it would be nice to know if uTorrent -eventually- comes back from being locked. An hour or so should be more than adequate, depending on the size of the file. Also, Alt-Tab around, and look for Confirm File Delete dialogs, or any other progress windows that might be hiding.

I'm using two drives, a smaller internal drive, and a large external drive. Both of them have files being currently seeded. From my previous experiences, uTorrent hasn't come back from being locked up but I'll leave it running once more to see if it does come back. Also I've never had any hidden dialogs when this has happened.

Hm, this might be related. Is there a Recycle Bin on both drives? Does it matter which drive the data that is being deleted sits on? Can you reproduce it by (first backing up your data! then) yanking the external drive during a delete?

There is a recycle bin on both drives, and I don't think it has to do with a particular drive because the only file I deleted recently was on my internal drive. I did that several hours before the GUI hang happened though.

Well yeah, a reproduction would be good. All the dumps we've seen so far have pointed at the delete to trash function.. can you think of any reason it might have executed hours later?

Alright I just deleted something that was about 350MB from the external drive, and I disconnected the drive within 1 second of clicking the delete command. uTorrent did not lock up.

I have no idea, but I do know that when uTorrent restarted after I sent the dump, the torrent file for the file I deleted previously was back in the torrents list. The data file itself wasn't there, so the status said "Error: missing files" or something to that effect. So I just redeleted the torrent again.
