Firon
Those SpeedUpMyPC and registry optimizer apps do more harm than good.
Shadowra
Hello everyone,I am a fairly new user of μTorrent and a bit of a newbie, so please do bear with me. Either way, here's my case:I've recently installed Windows Vista Ultimate, on a seperate partition Z: created by Windows XP on Partition Magic. For some absurd reason that I still cannot comprehend, this has been causing loads of problems as is; not being able to modify files, rename directories, not even save on other existing save files on all games I've tried so far. To cut to the chase -- About 3 days ago, I started downloading a 8GB download, a series of episodes of Friends. I only allow the torrent to download when I am not doing something on the internet, for obvious traffic reasons, hence it's only reached 54.4%, with about 12 episodes finished. In any case, I, too, am presented with this dreadful "Error: Access is denied" case, which on the logger is attributed as "Error opening 'C:\Friends\Episode 10.avi'" in a multitute of times, and "Error opening 'C:\Friends\Episode 18.avi'". The download till that point was running very smoothly, and I was even happy with the speed despite the low amount of seeders. So yeah, after trying many of the stuff here and on other sites, I am still running in that problem. Here's certain things that changed between normal torrent download flow and error: I downloaded some Windows Vista update, that I really doubt changed anything; downloaded the new 1.7.7 Build Something version of μTorrent, which by default was in Greek, prompted me to restart the application in order for it to change back to English (you really realise how hideous your language is with such terminology on μTorrent, heh) but I couldn't be bothered, since it wasn't a major deal and didn't want to interrupt the download, yet next time after I restart the PC for the update to be finished installing, there goes the problem; and finally, something I feel I should mention, I opened the folder, and Vista has this little bad habit of being default at "Large Icons" which is Thumbnails, thus ran its small happy thumbnail creating, and I then proceeded to watch some episodes (Sorry, I have already mentioned I am a newbie. >.>)So, in detail:Unlocker reports: Nothing is locking the folder. I couldn't get it to run on Vista, so I simply ran on XP.Programs running that could be hindering: Frankly, none, since I installed Vista fairly recently, I have only the real basics on, so I doubt that's it.Course of action taken: Right now, I am running μTorrent 1.7.6 on Windows XP and it's all going no problem, at least for the last 3% or so. I restarted the computer a good number of times after each change made, as instructed by the FAQ, but Vista still wouldn't run anything. I now made a Copy of the folder "Friends" (Windows are so full of wit, 'Copy of Friends'!) that I might try afterwards, for now just enjoying a smoothe download. So yeah, that's about it. Once the download finishes here, I will try again on Vista and come back to you. Till then, any help, tips, etc. would be greatly appreciated!Peace,ShadowP.S. Sorry for wall of text
dio_devil
Hey,This is continuing what I have on Top...I have uninstalled SpeedUpMyPC and registry optimizer apps, didnt know they did more harm than good... thanks... but I still get the "Error: Access Denied on Utorrent". I also updated it to 1.7.7. with no luck. Can the download/seed ratio be a problem? What if I was a member to a private tracker? Would that affect ANY download? Any Ideas? Any help appreciated,dio_devil
jewelisheaven
Access Denied means SOME other program is trying to talk to the files you're downloading. Disable media indexers search indexers, and media players for your download directory. If you don't know what that is... Run HiJackThis and post the copy-pasted log below. jewelisheaven
Thanks for the log it gives many leads on the problem. Those VAIO media indexers could be a problem. Please add an exception for your uT download directory. Additionally Nero Scout isn't known for playing nice. What's this Boonty games and do you know why it has a service?DEFINITELY those vaio media platform services being listed three times is NOT good. The only difference is the (Application) entries :/ This sounds like a new computer. Is your D: drive your cd/dvd?? You were running something called "AVP".. do you know what that is? Also I don't know what / if these are a problem O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HTpatch] C:\WINDOWS\htpatch.exeO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ezShieldProtector for Px] C:\WINDOWS\System32\ezSP_Px.exeO4 - HKCU\..\Run: [uniblue RegistryBooster 2] C:\Program Files\Uniblue\RegistryBooster 2\RegistryBooster.exe /SI included the last one.. Registry Booster doesn't sound like a good program :/ I know this is alot of possible problem programs... it is possible listing the DLLs hooked in the uT process may help, and it may not. So I'd start first with the media server / indexers .. and for cleanliness sake deal with those extra "helping" applications that shipped with your Vaio :/ This is why I don't like pre-branded PCs.. too much crap on them. dio_devil
Okay....this is what I did: I uninstalled RegistryBooster....that didnt help. My computer is not new its about 6 years old. I keep all my cd/dvds in my D: drive is that what you mean? But I make backup copies in my F: drive, its the one that reads cd/dvds. I have no idea about media server/ indexers but I'll find out about it...Conclusion: I had installed a AVP in my D: drive, and when I uninstalled it Utorrent started working again... THANKS SO MUCH.... you guys really helped. I will let you know if I have any more problems....THANKS AGAIN!!Dio_Devil
argayazn
I've got the answeeer, I've got the answer lalalalalalal lalalalala the solution is so easy guys oops forgot to tell u the solutionok look you first go to the logs it shows one of the file name over and over if u've tried more than once to open it. then you delete the torrent from ur utorrent or whatever not the files just the torrent, ok now you got to the file or the folder in ur downloads and you cut and paste or remove whatever to the desktop, make sure the file is not in the download folder as a copy or whatever. now reload the torrent meaning click on the torrent file to add to utorrent and when it opens and askes about which files to download just make sure to uncheck the problematic file in the list. problem sold ow btw the problem files are usually causing the problem after they are done downloading. so at the end of ur torrent download just move back ur file to the original folder from the desktop. jewelisheaven
Problems with Access Denied are not solved by moving the data. There is SOME other program CONFLICTING with uT's ability to write to files. Removing that software fixes the problem. In certain cases it is possible to add an exclusion for that application to NOT monitor your downloading folder, only your completed folder because at that time there is no need for uT to open the file for writing. argayazn
It solves the problem as long as the problem causing file in the logger is not in the downloads folder i just did 2 torrents worked both times of course it is little time consuming however JEWelisheavon if you got a more permanent solution so we don have to do it for each torrent please be kind enough to share not criticize!!!!!!! Ultima
We do have/offer a more permanent solution: make the conflicting software stop trying to access the files µTorrent, get rid of the software that's causing the file access issues, or replace it with an equivalent piece of software that doesn't cause problems. useruser
I encountered the Access Denied problem when migrating from XP to Vista, and have found a few ways around the problem. The problem occurs when utorrent cannot access the file, my Vista user accound is not administrator and the file could not be written by user, therefore the error occurred. The way to get around it is to change file permissions to include everyone like shitface said.Another way is to run utorrent as administrator (this just worked).Running utorrent as administrator presents a problem though when trying to add a torrent by opening a torrent file from windows, it tries to add the torrent to the administrator running utorrent, but cannot access it because i am only a user, therefore presents the message 'utorrent is running but not responding'I have to go to utorrent and manually add the torrents from the file menu, this is not a good thing. Could this issue be fixed?Cheersedit: using 1.7.7, sorry about that.
jewelisheaven
I don't think you need to run under a DIFFERENT account. I think you only have to tell Vista THAT you are an administrator... something about "run as elevated user" I think? :/ I've used Vista twice and I didn't get that far in customizing my UI. useruser
Yep, that's what I mean, I run utorrent as an administrator (rightclick -> run as administrator), then when I try to open a torrent file (double click on it), it believes that utorrent is not responding. jewelisheaven
I don't know for sure.. but could you copy your %APPDATA%\uTorrent folder and run it with 1.8 self-contained http://utorrent.com/faq.php#How_can_I_share_my_torrents_between_user_profiles.3F with "/RECOVER" appended to the exe to see if it's fixed in 1.8? That certainly sounds like a bug... which contrasts with my original understanding of it saving the torrent somewhere it shouldn't, as in the INVOKED user profile instead of the profile of the CURRENT user even though you gave it ELEVATED privileges >< If you really want to get more into it... download Process Monitor from http://sysinternals.com and start logging prior to adding the torrent (Ctrl-E) and log until after you add it and uT is "frozen". Then filter it for the PID of the utorrent.exe process, and look for those "Access Denied" error messages.
Firon
All you can do is make sure your regular user account has permission for where you're saving stuff to. There's really no way around it on Vista.
Drex
Try selecting all the files in explorer (or all your *.!ut files, if you have it configured that way), go into properties and turn the read only flag off - worked for me
BushManDan
In regards to access denied i tried all of the usual corrections as mentioned in utorrent help, forums and the web but none of them worked. I am running windows vista 64 bit and i uninstalled and reinstalled many things as well as disabling indexing service and still nothing. Finally i looked at where the files were being stored. In the past I just made a download folder in utorrent and had no problems but it's apparent in vista this will not work. The solution that worked was making a folder in desktop/my computer or your computer name/documents/torrent downloads. Bam!!! Everything is working fine now with all programs enabled. A simple problem yet it took me 2 hours to get there. Hope this helps when all else fails, .
