temych267 Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 Hello everyone,I am using our university network and I know that all Internet traffic is analyzed. We had precedents when students got fine for downloading mp3 music from Internet. My question is - is it possible to analyze traffic generated by uTorrent? I mean will they be able to analyze what I download with uTorrent? And if I use encryption built-in uTorrent - will it help me to hide the content I download?Thank you,T.
Switeck Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 Not if/when the torrent's hash and filesize is transmitted in the clear by some foolish ip that connects to you. A simple GOOGLE search can often turn up what common torrent file matches that hash value.
temych267 Posted November 29, 2007 Author Report Posted November 29, 2007 As I understand - it is impossible to analyze traffic if I use encryption. To be more sure I set outgoing connection encryption to "Forced" and Unchecked "Allow incoming legacy connections" - am I right?
Firon Posted November 30, 2007 Report Posted November 30, 2007 They can still see tracker communication.
Lord Alderaan Posted November 30, 2007 Report Posted November 30, 2007 Encryption only encrypts the header not the actual data. It doesn't provide any protection. The only reason for encryption is to circumvent a certain type of BitTorrent traffic throttling. If you are not allowed to download through BitTorrent at all you have a problem. There is no good way to hide it. You can only hope they don't employ decent detection methods. If someone got fined they obviously DO employ at least half-decent methods. If you are allowed to BitTorrent just not for illegal stuff you still are at risk. Your uni could receive one of those famous infringement emails. And with the proper knowledge and effort they could even find out themselves.
