HellyHans Posted December 6, 2007 Report Posted December 6, 2007 Ok... I've been testing for 2 weeks a problem I've been having with Utorrent..My problem: Computer freezes when I download a torrent and leave the computer on for more that 12 hours...(time varies)Here are my findings..HardwareRouter DI-624Wireless USB adapter DWL-G132I downloaded 1.7.5, -I've done all the faqs.. disabled everything that is indicated in the guides.. -patched my TCP to 50..even set it to 20 once.-No eventID 4226-I've left the advanced settings in utorrent to the defaults. and tried the recommended settings for half connections etc...-disabled my software firewall/antivirus-My windows has all updates done possible-All my hardware has the latest drivers-Everything forwarded properly in router.-speed settings are to my connexion xx/768Problem still occurs, Now I've read somewhere that my USB adapter can get over saturated... Fine, because after the freeze I have to power off/on my computer and when it comes back to windows.. my wireless USB isn't detected by windows.. I have to remove it and put it back in its cradle. So I decided to install a previous version because i hasn't done this in the past.I installed 1.7.2.-Same settings everywhere as I had in 1.7.5The computer has been running 3 days downloading 1 torrent and not one freeze. So I decided.. hey let me try 1.7.5 again…Freeze after about 13 hours…What is the difference between 1.7.5 and 1.7.2 because there is something wrong with 1.7.5.. unless someone can prove me wrong and show me the difference..I have not tried 1.7.3 or 1.7.4 yet, but I will and let you know of my findings. Thanks
jewelisheaven Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 huuh? you really don't want to use 1.7.2. First reason, official support staff will tell you to upgrade when you're using an older version.Secondly, What OS are you running? Thirdly USB keys overheat...Do you notice any system instability prior to the freeze?
HellyHans Posted December 7, 2007 Author Report Posted December 7, 2007 no, system was always 100% stableIam running xp sp2 with all updates donenow, I would really find it odd that someone would tell me to upgrade to the current version when ITS the current version that is freezing the PC.. the version 1.7.2 does not.Now iam wondering why, and want to let people know about this...Why is it that when i run 1.7.5 for over 10hours, the computer freezes.. and 1.7.2 has not froze once on a period of 1 week of tests... and 1.7.5 cant even last 24h?Like I said.. all the settings are EXACTLY the same in both versions. And I'am aware that the problem is most likely my usb adapter.. but why does 1.7.2 not crash the system?? Does it load less my adapter?? I don't know. thats why I posted this to get some feedback.Saying " you don't want to use 1.7.2", is rediculous.. 1.7.2 WORKS! and 1.7.5 causes a problem, I want to let people know.
Firon Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 Can't simply disable the firewall. Have you uninstall it. Besides, any freezes (BSOD or otherwise) are simply a sign of a deeper problem in your system. Is it a BSOD when you freeze?
HellyHans Posted December 7, 2007 Author Report Posted December 7, 2007 nope,i don't have a BSOD.firewall software is disabled as I have set it to not start during windows and I have verified in the services.msc if its running and its not.. so my software firewall was deactivated during these tests.only firewall was hardware (router)The freeze is like when windows tells the monitor to go in powersave mode... I have no screen saver setup. so when I go to wake the monitor by moving the mouse... I get nothing.. CTRL-ALT-DEL=nothing.. NUM LOCK is frozen=system frozen. Now I have left my computer on for weeks in the past and never froze, it only freezes when irs utorrent running...whats weird is that its only 1.7.5 and not 1.7.2.I thought... hey. maybe it will eventually freeze with 1.7.2 so i kept running it for over 3 days.. not one freeze... I closed the program, kept running my normal apps.. (playing Crysis these days only) and thats it. nothing new has been installed/introduced during my tests..anyways. i guess I'll just keep using 1.7.2 until a new version comes out and I will test that one and see..
DreadWingKnight Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 What software firewall? With the SOLE exception of the windows built-in firewall, the ONLY way to disable the firewall is to uninstall it.
HellyHans Posted December 7, 2007 Author Report Posted December 7, 2007 kaspersky internet security...Its disabled and not running...it does not load either on startup. so no drivers are loaded.PLUS i ad this issue before i installed Kaspersky. i used to run ZA , and i thought it was that program causing me problems.. apparently no...and supposable the new ZA has alot less issues with torrent programs.. so i might reinstall..Anywho.. firewall or not.. when I have 1.7.2 running=no crash, 1.7.5 it crashes..why dunno, thats the reason for my post
jewelisheaven Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 And unless you provide some sort of log, perhaps including uTorrent functioning prior to the crash there is no ability to diagnose this aside from the previous lines of questioning. When it crashes is there a crash dump created?
Firon Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 You can't disable the firewall, only uninstall it or configure it properly.Even if "disabled", it's still actually hooked into the system, without you seeing it.
HellyHans Posted December 7, 2007 Author Report Posted December 7, 2007 Where do I get the crash dump file?I will get a hijack this log for you guys when I get home.I will uninstall by firewall just for tests issues again tonight and post my log. Thanks
jewelisheaven Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 If indeed uT crashes it usually pops up a picture like THIS (Pic borrowed from 1.8 thread)If it is something un- or marginally-related to uT, then it probably wont. That would be good, testing is always welcomed instead of trying to stay on an outdated version.
HellyHans Posted December 7, 2007 Author Report Posted December 7, 2007 Cool, I will check out my windows mini dump and see also if uT created a log at the same time.Things I didn't think of.The event manage in XP doesn't show me anything in error either..
magnus33 Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 He is quite correct something about 1.7.5 causes the computer to freeze. It actually seems to have little to do with time and more to do with the computer being idle and going into screensaver mode or the like.Xp sp2 all updatesTwo different system with totally different hardware and same issue.Turn utorrent off no freezing period. All software other then utorrent as be ruled out including firewalls and antivirus. This is likely alot more wide spread then just these two reports since its hard to track down. The problem has been in utorrent since 1.7.5 and is still in the present version 1.7.7.
Ultima Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 Just for completeness' sake, please post a HijackThis log?
jewelisheaven Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 ALL reports thusfar are related to incompatible software. One helpful user named Drew42 was able to elucidate a specific hook a program was making to uT bloating it up RAM-wise until it crashed. It is not hard to track down when you provide a HJT log and a DLL list for utorrent.exe (open procexp.exe, Ctrl-L, Ctrl-D, click utorrent.exe, Ctrl-A). Both programs are in the How-To.
