Im sorry if this is wrong. I read for hours on the FAQ, Guide, How To, (Thank you Jewel for all that help!!!!) I am extremely afraid that I will lose a torrent that is not done downloading yet. Its 58% already downloaded and it is a big file. The problem is it wont come up. I try to pull up Utorrent up from Programs or even double clicking the icon and it says UTORRENT IS RUNNING BUT DOES NOT SEEM TO BE RESPONDING. TRY STOPPING ALL PROCESSES AND TRY AGAIN. I did that but it keeps giving me same message to. Is there anyway to uninstall Utorrent, reinstall back and then Read very carefully Jewels How To? I am gonna be so angry b/c I have been downloading this for 2 days now. The file is 7.44 GB so if anyone can tell me how I will be able to save the rest of this download I would so much appreciate it. I am of course very new so if anyone could be so patient. I also have downloaded Peer Guardian 2. My firewall is AVG 7.5. and my router is WRT54G v5. Ok so thats all the info I can think of to put on here. Thanks a bunch!

So you're just minding your business and you want to check the progress of your download and uT doesn't show itself?

If you look in Windows Task manager do you see active traffic?

I don't know what specifically can cause the GUI to freeze, but it could be any number of things.

Did you notice any system slow down? What OS version and uT version are you running?

EDIT: While I appreciate the thought, I'd like to point out I had nothing to do with any of the links in my signature. Other much more talented better members of the community provide said information and help, I only include it in my signature because it's a whole lot easier to say (read here) to repeated questions instead of typing out the whole URLs each and every time.

A simple way to see if there are incompatible programs without having to restart uT is to download and run HiJackThis and post the logfile in the thread to see if myself or others see problem programs.

If it is only a locked file handle then closing THAT Program should cause ut to respond again.

However if you havn't had any traffic since the freeze it really doesn't matter in a usability aspect, but for a program problem cause, it is valid.

Actually I did notice before it wouldnt open things started to become really slow. I did a scan with Spybot Search and Destroy and didnt show any viruses just a bunch of cookies and such. Besides they are gone anyway now. I looked in the Task Manager and Utorrent is running. My OS is XP and the Utorrent is the newest version I think its called 1.7.5 something like that sorry. I have only had it for a couple of days.

Also I renamed those settings.dat to settings.dat_ that I read in another post. (I read alot before I posted lol) Thats all I can think of. Do you know if I would be able to save that download? It was at 58% and I have no idea what will happen.

Oh and you can give yourself credit for those manuals and guides too for helping out igmos like me LOL Thanks!

Can you tell me how I do HiJackThis? Thanks!

OK. Uhm in Windows Task Manager, if you still see utorrent.exe that's good.

Is it consistently using 100% cpu usage? Also, if you switch to the "Networking" tab, does it show traffic... you know, in and out?

*If you don't see anything, try View -> Network Adapter History -> and tick either / or both Yellow *Received* and Red *Sent* data. *

Hehe, you sure were thorough, just remember as long as uT IS still running it will continue to make new settings.dat and resume.dat files.

For HiJackThis you go http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php and download it. Then run the scan, and you post the logfile here.

Examples of what it will look like can be found here and here

Again, I didn't make the helpful manuals/stickies/programs. I just provide easy one-click access in my signature.

Sorry I havent written anything yet Jewel. I followed the directions on that page and tried to clean my PC first. They told me to try this before downloading HiJackThis. But I will download for sure and put the log in here. Utorrent still hasnt come up. Big surprise there...

EDIT 1: Here is the logfile of HiJackThis Jewel. Thanks agian for your help!

Well good morning again :) You know you still haven't answered my question about during all this time, have you been uploading/downloading anything. I only keep hammering at this point because if the networking components haven't been active, then there's not much benefit to leaving it in this "frozen" state.

As for your log, the first thing that pops out is winpcap... Whoever suggested that knows alot more than I do, heh... it's a nifty way to evaluate your network traffic ... for use later in debugging transport problems or for picking up unwanted activity on your network, or for reverse-engineering a new protocol.

Also I did a basic search for O23 - Service: ewido security suite control - ewido networks - C:\Program Files\ewido\security suite\ewidoctrl.exe and thanks. I didn't know AVG had an anti-spyware product.

In ant case I can now say you are running a default configured Windows XP Media Center PC >:) though I bet you already knew that.

My theory is that AVG is set to real-time scanning mode and that is interfering with your computer, and uTorrent for that matter because once it "sees" the files you are downloading it wants to look at them.

If you could try deactivating your AVG virus / malware scanner, and checking that your firewall is set to allow uTorrent traffic...

That's as far of a next step as I think is prudent right now (please PLEASE tell me if you are / have been sending any data during this "freeze" time :) )... that coupled with the fact it's late.

Can someone else go over the log please, I'ma bit tired.

Hey Jewel! Sorry your so tired and thank you for taking time to respond to me. I went to Task Manager and went to Networking and changed to where it would show me bytes sent and received and there are. I made sure I clicked on Utorrent before went to networking. Also on Processes it said that Utorrent was receiving 5,888 K. So does that mean I am uploading and downloading even though I cant pull it up? Do you think I should just go ahead and use that port that Utorrent uses already? I found some ports that werent used for anything. I will configure router and firewall again to make sure and restart. Hopefully it works. And will be sure to turn off AVG virus scanner while Im downloading. Hope I dont get any spyware or anything. EWIDO is not running though. Its a disk a friend gave me a while back that I use every now and then. Thanks again for your help!

OOH! good, well that means in this 2 days you have not been able to SEE uT, it has been plugging away.

If the problem is what i suspect (another program tying up the files) then disabling it should return uT to a functional GUI.

Remember, bittorrent is an EXACT byte-for-byte copy of the source.

Any incidental occurrence of BAD THINGS happening while you are downloading is incidental and coincidental. This is unless of course you opened that .exe file promising "beautiful screensavers" but instead you only got a blank screen or an error message (by the way in that timeframe four programs installed themselves on your hard drive :P )

Generally if a file comes down the pipes as an unexpected extension, or an irregular size checking the page where you got the torrent from for comments or posting one yourself can usually sort out the problem.

Also understand most people are infected by malware / trojans due to default settings. Even if you're not a "techno-savvy person" you still have configured your computer more than say some guy who just brought home his first computer. :)

Regarding your comment about ewido, I'm sorry if you don't see a GUI, but there IS a process that ewido (AVG anti spyware) is using.

O23 - Service: ewido security suite control - ewido networks - C:\Program Files\ewido\security suite\ewidoctrl.exe

It is possible this can be turned off by opening the program and going into an advanced setting or any place marked "start when windows starts"... for starts.

Also since I haven't mentioned it before, the usage of the "download bar" for individual torrents can also be used for a quick look of your active torrents, and I THINK but am not positive they are not on the same thread as the main GUI so in your case they may have / had still been working while the main GUI is frozen. (click on a torrent, right click and go to advanced, and "show download bar" to enable) This of course can be tested when you get the GUI to respond again. :D

Overall I applaud you for for being so investigative on your own and thank you for your understanding and help in solving your own problem.

Ok tell me if Im right...

Set Firewall for Port 55698 for TCP in and UDP out. Set router on 55698 for Utorrent traffic. I just wanted to make sure I got TCP and UDP on right settings (in and out)

Also deact. AVG antivirus, uninstalled EWIDO. Utorrent still wouldnt come up even after restart. But I hadnt configured firewall and router either. Now I should. Does that port # sound ok? I did read all that about port forwarding and this one is not taken by anything. Thanks alot!

Also If Im wrong on any of this PLEASE let me know thank you!

Well if you utilize any of the DHT or LPD (distributed hash table / local peer discovery) services you really need to open UDP both ways. TCP setting is right since you are telling the whole world, "THIS IS ME on PORT 55698." If uTorrent does not activate the window after a windows reboot (is that what you're saying?) then, perhaps the way you launch it is at fault.

Also if I can provide some advice, sure it's easy to setup things again, but regular backups of your %APPDATA%\utorrent directory means you only have to delete the folder and unpack the backup in the event of something crazy happening.

Are you launching uT from a shortcut? Is it in the start menu or on the desktop? Or are you just clicking on the EXE wherever it happens to be?

uT really shoud respond immediately upon startup (barring loading in 200 MB of RAM worth of resume.dat data... and even having to verify previously running torrents still allows the window to be activated)... :/ Now i'm confused again.

Im sorry and I hope you wont be mad for all the help you have given me but I went ahead and just uninstalled it. I plan on installing it again but Im gonna go ahead and start with small files and see how that works. Now I know I deactivate the AVG antivirus and just set my firewall and router to the specific port for Utorrent traffic right? Well this time I know for sure Im gonna follow those directions carefully on the How To Guide. Thank you Jewel for all your help! Also you have such a pretty name.
